Tortured WWII British Soldier Tracks Down Japanese Tormentor And Forgives Him
The Daily Mail ^ | 10-9-12 | Robert Hardman

Beaten to a pile of broken bones, caged, starved and tortured, Eric Lomax was convinced he would never see Britain ever again.

He had already experienced the lottery of death among the chain gangs on the Burma-Siam Railway. Now things were even worse. Accused of being a spy, he had been left to the mercies of the Japanese army’s secret police.

Among their specialities was what is today known as ‘waterboarding’, when a prisoner undergoes near-drowning. It was surely only a matter of time before he would be put out of his misery.

Every once in awhile you come across a story that clearly illustrates what Christianity is all about.

Most of us would like to be this kind of Christian, but few of us will attain it.

Perceived near drowning.

I'm sure our POWs would've been delighted if the Japanese had simply waterboarded.

If you haven’t already, get the book “Unbroken”. It is a very similar story.

I’ve never heard of Japanese waterboarding. What the guy is referring to is a much more painful form of torture described as follows:

Ruthless in the extreme, he loved tormenting us. He especially revelled in a sickening brand of water torture.

He had guards pin down his hapless victim before pouring gallons of water down the prisoner’s throat using a bucket and hose. The man’s stomach would swell up from the huge volumes of water.

Okada would then gleefully jump up and down on him. Sometimes guards tied barbed wire around the poor soul’s stomach. Most died; only a few survived.

GOD has blessed him with the strength to forgive. I hope I would have the willpower and strength to do the same. I read the book unbroken and at the end I have to admit I was rooting for the US Serviceman to get revenge on his Japanese captors.....

Most of us would like to be this kind of Christian, but few of us will attain it.

Being true to the precepts put forth by our Lord is really difficult. Sadly, I find myself so far from the mark most times that I'm truely grateful our Lord is merciful. Those few times it my life when I felt well and truely within his will should be enough to cause me to more fervently seek that well being of spirit always, but we poor creatures are easily distracted by shiny things, and we forget that which we should not.

Walking the walk of Christ is not an easy task.

Saw a documentary once about Australian POWs during WW II.One former POW said that most of the Japanese guards were vicious beyond belief but one or two were decent to the prisoners...refraining from abuse and giving them extra food.He said that if any other guard had found out and reported it to superiors the decent guards would have been executed on the spot.

If it weren’t for God’s grace, most of us would be doomed.

Most of us would like to be this kind of Christian, but few of us will attain it.

Most of us will never have the opportunity to be "this kind of Christian". Most of us will never face any worse persecution than having misguided or malevolent folks say bad things about us.

Still, we should ask God to give us the grace to forgive them.

"Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us ..."
