After years of being a member of Amazon.com, I just CLOSED MY AMAZON.COM ACCOUNT after they agreed to begin collecting sales taxes for this blood sucking state.
I'll continue online shopping from OUT OF STATE VENDORS and PAY ZERO state tax and get free shipping. I get what I want and Amazon.com and Calistan LOSE!
You mean buying through Amazon from out of state vendors will help you avoid the state sales tax?
Didn’t I just say “I CLOSED MY AMAZON.COM ACCOUNT”?
NO. I said I will buy directly from out of state vendors that do not charge California sales tax.
Try eBay or Craigs list.
No. That's not what he said.
Prime Member here.
When they start charging tax in Merryland I’m out.
Then I will short Amazon.
Why wait?
Smart move because it just hit a 22+ high.
That’s not what he said? Really?
What about an answer to my question?
I appreciate informative posts. No one appreciates emotional posts.
Amazon surrendered. Too bad. I love Amazon. They held out for a long while, but I’m not sure they had any choice. Other options must be explored.
But it was alright, everything was alright, the struggle was finished. He Amazon had won the victory over himself. He Amazon loved Big Brother. ― George Orwell, 1984
Buy direct from websites outside the state.
Yes, really.
What about an answer to my question?
I did answer your question. I replied with a simple "no."

I agree with you, the original post appeared very emotional and did not present much in the way of background or factual information. There's not even a source.
I did almost all of my Christmas shopping through Amazon last year because with free shipping and no sales tax, there were really good deals on toys for the kids and other unique items and I didn’t need to physically go to 100 different places. If they start charging sales tax, they’re going to lose a ton of business because that was one of the great things about shopping there— saving on tax and shipping.
want facts? Try GOOGLE. It took me all of 3 seconds there to find the story.
What is the Almighty State about now? Streets of my city are full of potholes, but state taxes, sales taxes and property taxes are at their all time high. Where does the money go? There used to be state services, well stocked libraries, good schools, and now? Like you, I suspect that the taxes go to overpaid state workers (yes they are predominantly black here, and predominantly or certainly behind the wheels of Lexuses and Mercedeses), as Obama is not the only symptom of the white man’s guilt, and they go toward services for the so called poor, but not the really poor, the unaccounted poor, whom you see pushing stolen shopping carts on city streets filled with their possessions and empty cans and bottles.
Because I get stuff cheaper than Costco and second day air or over night, which I love to do on Thursdays, and I don't have to leave the house.
When saving money and not paying tax on it I'm done.
They didn’t “AGREE” to it. The state of California FORCED then to do it. You are punishing the WRONG entity.
I’ve been buying a lot from dealers who advertise through Amazon. They’re going to suffer, too.
I would rather support surrounding business' anyway to help keep the local retail industry healthy.
If your dumb enough to live in the state, your dumb enough to pay taxes.
Shame on you. Shop local! Keep you tax dollars, and jobs, in your community. If you don’t like California, then MOVE.
A few years back there was a case where Massachusetts (high sales tax) tried to force a company in neighboring New Hampshire (no sales tax) to assist Massachusetts in collecting sales tax from Massachusetts residents. In short, the effort failed miserably.
Oh well,to the Maoists currently running California it's all about the Benjamins.
That’s good. That’s why after 2 decades here we are loading up the RV and leaving after selling everything we don’t haul.
My wife and I will spend out golden years traveling no matter what the price of gas. After 40 years together, she deserves that much from me.
;-D
The moment Amazon charges sales tax I will do as you are doing. The parasite class will only use the additional money to abuse us. Mostly they will just outright waste it.
I pray for the day that the bureaucratic parasite class will be forced to earn an honest day's pay in the private sector.
Why wait to short the stock?
I believe they have an office here. They’d be better off firing everyone and letting the fire department burn it for fun.
“Amazon surrendered. Too bad. I love Amazon. They held out for a long while, but Im not sure they had any choice. Other options must be explored.”
That’s right, Amazon didn’t have any other choice. CA is a big state that they couldn’t afford not to have a presence in, and the Lib, Dem State forced them into it as they are so desperate for more money to fill their coffers for more social spending and the state is broke. It’s for the children, you know.
Meanwhile, there is more than one way to skin a cat. Amazon needs more warehouses for their goods, so they will now open new ones in CA where they are stuck having to pay the sales tax anyway (Amazon, like all other big box/catalog businesses have to collect sales taxes in states where they have a physical presence). So, Amazon may as well make use of CA for their warehouse facilities now that they are stuck collecting sales tax there, and at least get something out of it. Actually, this will work to the benefit of the high amount of unemployed population in CA as at least some of them can now get jobs at the new warehouses, as well as the new construction of them producing jobs too.
I think that shorting Amazon is the right thing to do, as great a company they are - this surrender will definitely affect their sales. The states are greedy and still broke.
It’d going to drop!
No need to be snippy with me. I didn't ask for anything. I don't come to FR looking for headlines that I subsequently have to research on the Internet. It's nice to find the story after a headline.
Since you brought it up, however, why didn't you simply post the story in the first place? You could have included your rant as a comment, instead of a vanity post self-described as "breaking news."
In Massachusetts...and,I'll wager,*most* states with a sales tax...the sales tax's official title is "sales and use" tax.Under Massachusetts tax law anything you buy anywhere that would incur sales tax in the state must be declared on your state income tax return and at that time you pay the 6.25%.Of course, with no sales tax New Hampshire right next door and with Amazon and similar companies very few residents declare such purchases.
Of course *I* do,because I'm a *good* boy! ;-)
I’ve been perfectly happy with Amazon not having presence here. I can wait (for the delivery) and haven’t had to wait long. If the local businesses sold at a discount, I’d buy from them, but I’ve been buying my photo and hifi equipment for decades from places like New York City, presumably high rent districts (42st Street Photo, for example), while the local dealers justified their high prices by their supposedly high rents, a least until the Hindu owned stores opened up here.
Because it hasn’t gone nationwide yet?
I short usually after the free fall begins the cheap bastard that I am.
Ever notice all the typo’s in my posts? I’m almost blind. It’s all I can do to type a few lines.
Driving... well that’s another matter. The bright lines really help.

Remember Crown Books when it beat the book dealers to the bunch with discounts? Remember the used record stores that provoked the one and only (has-been) Garth Brooks to refuse to distribute to them?
If that's the case then there's something for the state to seize. It's probably just a matter of doing some math to determine if it makes more sense to stay there and collect the tax or leave and refuse to do so.Leave and the state sizes the office but you keep more CA customers.Stay and collect and you get to keep the office but you lose at least *some* CA customers.
On An iPad, you’re lucky all the words are spelled correctly.
That’s your right. But it sure seems that the day is coming when online sales will be taxed just like any other, and I can see the equity in that. Online businesses consume public services just like brick-and-mortar businesses do, so why shouldn’t they pay their “fair share” (gawd how I hate that term!)

Yup,over the last couple of years I've done exactly that...about $8K worth of various electronic items from NYC (B&H,J&R,etc) which doesn't collect taxes on out of state shipments. But as I said,I report all such purchases on my state tax return,as required by state law, because I'm a *good* boy! ;-)
Yes, I notice typos all the time — proofreading is part of my daily job. Lots of writing on the Internet is replete with typos, and I pretty much stopped pointing out online spelling and grammatical errors years ago.
I had no idea you’re almost blind. If that’s the case, it’s understandable that cutting and pasting Internet text may be more challenging. I wasn’t seeking to quarrel with anyone this evening.
Shares of Amazon reached an all-time high Thursday as investors bid up the stock in anticipation of the company’s announcement of additions to its Kindle tablet line (CNET’s live blog of the event starts at 10 a.m.). Amazon’s stock is up more than 43 percent for the year. In part, the stock is climbing on the assumption that gross profit margins are going to continue to increase. During Amazon’s second quarter, gross profits margins widened to 26.1 percent from 24.1 percent, which surpassed Wall Street’s expectations for the company. At least for now, that calmed the critics who pointed to the continuing heavy investments in marketing, infrastructure, and fulfillment.
SHORT THE STOCK!
If you go to Europe where they collect VAT on just about everything, collect your receipts and present them at the airport just before departure, they’ll refund all your VAT payments, because, why not, that is a civilized way of handling taxation. Why should I pay California sales tax on a purchase made in New York?
Well, good luck. I love Amazon and will continue to buy from them. I unfortunately live in IL which is also going after Amazon to collect sales tax and at some point they may be forced into it by our State pols. So far, they have held off, but many states are after Amazon because it is a big money pot of revenue collection, and the lib states are all broke.
The states claim it is unfair competition with local businesses as an excuses, but local businesses don’t have to charge shipping like on-line and catalog businesses do, a giant point the pols fail to acknowledge. They just want the money, regardless of what it does to an on-line or catalog’s business bottom line. Less people shopping a website, like you because you are taking it out on the wrong entity, Amazon in this particular case, will eventually affect sales, and less business start-ups on the web, and thus less jobs for potential employees. A lose, lose situation.
You can leave Amazon, but soon the states will be forcing all on-line website businesses and catalog houses to collect sales taxes and there will be nowhere for you to go. People need to go after the Pols that are supporting such legislation, not the victim businesses that end up having to bend to their political will.
Here's an article about this scheme. There is plenty more info available online. Apparently Washington State is gung-ho for this.
“the day is coming when online sales will be taxed just like any other”? Ever wonder what Article 1 Section 9 Clause 5 of the U.S. Constitution says?
“No tax or Duty shall be laid on Articles exported from any State.
