Faith With Works

August 3, 2012

Because of his arthritis, Roger could no longer handle the winters of Illinois, so he moved to tropical Bangkok, Thailand. One day he remembered his grandmother’s favorite song, “What You Are”: What you are speaks so loud that the world can’t hear what you say; they’re looking at your walk, not listening to your talk; they’re judging from your actions every day.

This song prompted Roger to feed the homeless who stayed along a half-mile stretch of road. Every morning, he served hot food to more than 45 families. Years later, one of the homeless women came to know Jesus as Savior and sought out Roger to thank him for introducing her to the love of Christ.

In James, we are clearly told that faith without works is dead (2:17). It does not mean that works will result in faith, but that good works will affirm that our faith is real. It is easy to say we believe in God, but only our works can prove the truthfulness of our words. Abraham was an example of this. He didn’t just talk about his faith; he demonstrated it by his willingness to give up his only son in obedience to God (James 2:21-24; see Gen. 22:1-18). And Isaac was spared.

Today, how can we actively demonstrate our love for God and trust in Him?

Faith is the power that prompts us to go
And give to the hungering, bread—
Faith means much more than a doctrine or two,
For faith without works is dead. —Woodrum
What matters is not faith and works; it is not faith or works; it is faith that works.

Read: James 2:14-26

Faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. —James 2:17

Giving to the needy .... comes with many possibilities. Now as with everything, church, organizations, there is the element of not knowing for sure how the monies are used. The method I use varies from time to time. Monthly I give to City Church in Amarillo that focuses on the 'inner city' essentially 'street kids.' They feed them every day, taking sack lunches to them in their neighborhood. There is a TV broadcast each week of the weeks services they perform. They teach them about God, Jesus, ... all summer they have on going Vacation Bible School, there in Amarillo, Texas. Different surrounding Baptist Churches send in youth groups to put on the classes. City Church hosts these Youths that come to work with these street kids, provides beds, food, and teaching of the process. Amazing works at every level.

They have a web site."City Church, Amarillo". Donnie Lane is the pastor now. His Dad, Don E. Lane started this church about 10 or so years ago; and He passed about three years ago. They have wonderful volunteers now, that make over a 1000 sack lunches 'every day' all year long! They take sack lunches into the 'City Church' going into their areas and bringing some of the street kids too, as teachers or instructors, to do a Vacation Bible School, in other cities, ... Houston, or Dallas, etc. They take a group of the high school ages youths to Summer Camp.

They buy Christmas presents for all the children, wrapped and chosen items especially for the child's likes, and delivers them for Christmas. A WONDERFUL MINISTRY. I am proud to participate. The Salvation Army is good too for helping locally, today they are giving away free fans. City Church, Amarillo, Once a year at the end of summer in the park for the families, A free meal and a time of visitation for all of the families of these children a salvation "JESUS LOVES ME" message is given.

There is also a small school in the City Church, for the lower grades. Free, they pick the children up and feed them breakfast and teaches them, gives them lunch, and takes them home later.

Also I support A few Ministries that teach over television and the "Baptist Bible Hour", that gives a message every Sunday via the Radio. etc. The point being It seems a good idea to find and support those groups we deem to be doing a good work through their ministry. It is the least I can do. And Prayer, lots of Prayer.

Life-Changing Choices

August 4, 2012

Champion athlete Eric Liddell’s decision not to run on Sunday in the 1924 Olympic Games was not difficult because of his deep belief that the Lord’s Day was for worship and rest.

A more agonizing dilemma had come a year earlier when Eric was asked to speak about his faith in Christ to a group of coal miners. Liddell said of his struggle: “My whole life had been one of keeping out of public duties but the leading of Christ seemed now to be in the opposite direction, and I shrank from going forward. At this time I finally decided to put it all on Christ—after all if He called me to do it, then He would have to supply the necessary power. In going forward the power was given me.”

The day after agreeing to publicly share his faith, Eric received a letter from his sister, Jenny, in China. Written weeks before, it ended with this verse of Scripture: “Fear not for I am with you; be not dismayed for I am your God; I will strengthen you, yes, I will help you; yes, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand” (Isa. 41:10).

Every call from God is an opportunity for us to say “Yes,” trusting His strength and not our own.

Lord, I’m fearful sometimes when You ask me
to do something out of my comfort zone.
Help me to remember that as I step out in faith,
You will provide the power to obey.
He who calls you is faithful, who also will do it. —1 Thessalonians 5:24

Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God. —Isaiah 41:10

That is not good my FRiend. I shall pray that the Lord gives you increased strength in that leg. I pray that your fall is a blessing in disguise and that it jarred loose the nerve in your back that has caused you problems before. My Lord says that when you want something, be specific. In His name it is done.

HAPPY CATURDAY TO AMY’S PLACE!

Gus - The Theatre Cat
A Poem By T S Eliot

Gus is the Cat at the Theatre Door.
His name, as I ought to have told you before,
Is really Asparagus. That's such a fuss
To pronounce, that we usually call him just Gus.
His coat's very shabby, he's thin as a rake,
And he suffers from palsy that makes his paw shake.
Yet he was, in his youth, quite the smartest of Cats--
But no longer a terror to mice and to rats.
For he isn't the Cat that he was in his prime;
Though his name was quite famous, he says, in its time.
And whenever he joins his friends at their club
(Which takes place at the back of the neighbouring pub)
He loves to regale them, if someone else pays,
With anecdotes drawn from his palmiest days.
For he once was a Star of the highest degree--
He has acted with Irving, he's acted with Tree.
And he likes to relate his success on the Halls,
Where the Gallery once gave him seven cat-calls.
But his grandest creation, as he loves to tell,
Was Firefrorefiddle, the Fiend of the Fell.

"I have played," so he says, "every possible part,
And I used to know seventy speeches by heart.
I'd extemporize back-chat, I knew how to gag,
And I knew how to let the cat out of the bag.
I knew how to act with my back and my tail;
With an hour of rehearsal, I never could fail.
I'd a voice that would soften the hardest of hearts,
Whether I took the lead, or in character parts.
I have sat by the bedside of poor Little Nell;
When the Curfew was rung, then I swung on the bell.
In the Pantomime season I never fell flat,
And I once understudied Dick Whittington's Cat.
But my grandest creation, as history will tell,
Was Firefrorefiddle, the Fiend of the Fell."

Then, if someone will give him a toothful of gin,
He will tell how he once played a part in East Lynne.
At a Shakespeare performance he once walked on pat,
When some actor suggested the need for a cat.
He once played a Tiger--could do it again--
Which an Indian Colonel purused down a drain.
And he thinks that he still can, much better than most,
Produce blood-curdling noises to bring on the Ghost.
And he once crossed the stage on a telegraph wire,
To rescue a child when a house was on fire.
And he says: "Now then kittens, they do not get trained
As we did in the days when Victoria reigned.
They never get drilled in a regular troupe, And they think they are smart, just to jump through a hoop."
And he'll say, as he scratches himself with his claws,
"Well, the Theatre's certainly not what it was.
These modern productions are all very well,
But there's nothing to equal, from what I hear tell,
That moment of mystery
When I made history
As Firefrorefiddle, the Fiend of the Fell."
