A new chemical could make human teeth 'cavity proof' - and do away with the need for visits to the dentists forever.
The molecule has been called 'Keep 32' - after the 32 teeth in a human mouth.
The chemical was designed by dentists in Chile, and wipes out all the bacteria that cause cavities in just 60 seconds in tests.
The chemical could be added to any current dental care product, turning toothpaste, mouthwash and chewing gum into 'super cleansers' that could get rid of the underlying cause of tooth decay.
The chemical targets 'streptococcus mutans', the bacteria that turns the sugar in your mouth into lactic acid which erodes tooth enamel.
By exterminating the bacteria, 'Keep 32' prevents the damage to teeth before it happens. Using a product containing the chemical keeps your teeth 'cavity proof' for several hours.
The product has been under test for seven years, and is now going into human trials.
It could be on the market in 14 to 18 months, say researchers José Córdoba from Yale University and Erich Astudillo from the University of Chile.
The chemical could even be added to foods to stop bacteria damaging teeth as you eat.
The researchers hope to licence the patent to chemical giants such as Procter and Gamble.

I have been using a Xylital toothpaste for the past year and my teeth have had very little plaque.
Here it comes, the FDA or the ADA or some such agency is going to find a “good” reason this product should not be used by the public......for their own good.
If that happens (no crystal ball here, just cynical), it will highlight the current model of modern medicine......
...preach prevention (”it’s the patient’s fault), charge for long term treatments that alleviate symptoms (not the underlying causes), STIFLE anything that even comes close to a cure.
Check out the current version of the Hippocratic oath....looks like a model for “health care” as business as opposed to actually curing anything!

recently I’ve started making my own toothpaste, and my mouth and teeth have felt fresher than ever before.
LOL, i sound like a commercial.
My kiddo, who tries to wash all the toothpaste off her brush likes it, and even hubby told me i’d better make another batch.
Ripper: Mandrake, do you realize that in addition to Keep 32 water, why, there are studies underway to add Keep 32 to salt, flour, fruit juices, soup, sugar, milk, ice cream? Ice cream, Mandrake. Children's ice cream?

Also, there is a nose spray with Xylitol, X-clear, which works extremely well for those with sinus problems...and you can use it as much as you want....no drugs or icky stuff in it.

You can bet your sweet bippy the ADA will oppoae this; there is a lot of money to be made in dentistry and they would hate to see one of their cash cows disappear.
There is a strong genetic component to tooth enamel susceptibility to cavities. My wife, bless her, is much more aggressive than I in maintaining her oral hygine (I am a bad boy when it comes to proper flossing). Yet she is the one who has suffered through several root canals, etc.
I’m curious why they feel that cavity elimination alone will eliminate dental visits as there is still the floss/gum disease issue that can’t be avoided through just brushing.

Xylitol toothpaste is good if you brush the teeth of an impaired person who might swallow the toothpaste occasionally. Flouride is really bad to swallow but xylitol won’t hurt you

Not sure I would want that going on in my mouth; might set up an imbalance, and cause gut bacteria to change. It’s not nice to fool around with Mother Nature TOO much...
