“I mean it wasn’t like “The Wiz””

Don’t know. I never saw “the Wiz.”

There was a lot of terrible disco made back in the ‘70s, but Donna Summer was one of the few good acts in that genre. RIP.

And as bad as it was, at least it was made with real musicians playing actual instruments unlike most dance music of today.

Tony Menaro = John Travolta

Tony Montana = Al Pacino

“Disco makes me violently ill.”

I used to feel that way, but the (rap) crap that’s out now makes me see how relatively innocent it was. It’s not “Your Hit Parade” level of innocence, but nothing compared to the absolutely mindless stuff of today.

In “Saturday Night Fever”, Tony Menaro is in front of a mirror going “Al Pacino” then chanting “Attica....Attica...Attica”, like Pacino’s gay character in “Dog Day Afternoon”......Maybe John was trying to tell us something back then.

Thanks for clearing that up!

(I had forgotten about that scene — Travolta was so cute and slender back then!)

About twenty minutes ago Rush mentioned her passing. He relayed the time he met Gloria and her husband on a plane when she came up to Rush and introduced herself and then proceeded to tell him they were one of us, conservatives......

Yup. I remember counting it on our jukebox, and “debating” my mom about great singers and who could hold notes. They were big Johnny Mathis fans (so was I - that’s the influence!), but I challenged Mom with just this once how long she held it.

Mom didn’t realize that was the end of actually requiring talent across the board in pop. It’s gotten much worse than she thought back then.

I love disco.

But then, there aren’t too many “genres” I don’t like.

I don’t think that’s quite right. In fact, some articles can’t help mentioning how she created “controversy” by apparently insulting !$#!@s because God was punishing them with AIDS. She said she was misquoted and apologized (later), in a Christian manner, apparently. She wasn’t apologizing for opposing homos, she was apologizing for hurtful statements regarding deadly diseases. (Again, I’ve only read snippets, so this is a grain of salt.)

I don’t agree.

There wasn’t much difference.

Whitney Houston, at one time at least, had one of the best voices of all time. Summer’s was mediocre.

Before Madonna, Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, and 100’s of other female pop vocalists, there was Donna Summer. In the late 70’s Ms. Summer was the Queen of the Pop Charts. Say what you will she was wildly adored worldwide, she was truly a diva. A great artist, a beautiful woman, and a from all accounts a decent person. She will be missed, and appreciated for the uniquely American icon that she was, prayers to her husband and children.

RIP Donna
