Be sure to check your county and city ordinances. In the area I live in (edge of the Washington DC metro area in northern Virginia) it is illegal to discharge any projectile weapon (including an air gun) within an urban area.
I had never heard of the Girandoni until recently, almost couldn’t believe it.
Good information on pellet size selection.....
Mind boggling technology for the early 1800’s.
A wrist rocket!! Many moons ago, when I visited a friend in the Houston area, we shot squirrels and rats off of power lines with these. Scary accurate ... though I wonder why his neighbor never complained about all the little white marbles in his pool :-) Thanks for the great memory!!
Finally clicked on your link there.....that IS amazing! Two hundred + years ago, and they had that sort of firepower in an air rifle (firing a .46 caliber round ball, at that!!!).
Wow.
“Trapping and relocating does not work unless you move them a great distance from their infested site.”
Just take ‘em over to the other side of the bayou.
No great distances involved.
That’s what the truck is for.
How would you like to be able to shoot a rimfire rifle or pistol that only makes 25% as much noise as a standard .22 LR gun? And no, were not talking about a suppressor-equipped firearm. CCI claims that its new Quiet-22 rimfire ammo generates one-quarter the perceived noise level of standard velocity .22 LR rounds. So this stuff is very quiet indeed, and its also affordable a 50-round box sells for under $4.00 at major online vendors.

I have seen if available for $2.69 per box of 50.
Yeah, they’re cool. They sell steel ball ammo for them now, no more searching for a “just right” rock. You’re right about them being very accurate with a little practice and, having taken a round to the backside many years ago, I can attest to their squeal like a pig, eye watering power.
Have you seen the "new" Wrist Rocket Pro? $36 or so, but looks like one hell of a piece of object-launching gear.

Get a GAMO Whisper, .17 cal. Shoot GAMO Red Fire .177 cal 7.8gr pellets.
Buy a “good” scope meant for a .30 cal hunting rifle. (Don’t bother mounting the scope that comes with the rifle. Air rifles eat cheap scopes within a relatively small number of firings.) Scope will probably cost as much or more than the air rifle but worth it. The GAMO Whisper is not quiet -— So shoot thru an open window or door from about 5 or 6 feet back into a room. Use a good rest.
The Red Fire pellet will stop them cold at 25 to 30’
Remember that a Gray or Red squirrel is considered a “game animal” in most States. Know your neighbors.
Have fun!
The part I can’t wrap my brain around is getting 800 psi out of a two hundred plus year old “bicycle style” pump. My fancy, modern, electric air compressor starts smoldering at around 95.
Rat traps and peanut butter.
Wow — no, I hadn’t seen this upgrade. That looks like exactly what would be needed to control squirrels and other vermin. ROL, I think you need to get your lady one of these (and let us know how she does with it)! Thanks for sharing.
No, I haven't, but it looks like a must have item to me. Cabela's here I come...
We just took a trip to Wally World up the street, and while there....she latched onto a Daisy brand wrist-rocket, some slingshot ammo, and some high-velocity airsoft rounds.
I’ll let ya know if the whole slingshot approach works. If so, I’ll probably spring for the fancy Wrist Rocket Pro (above).
Unless you're in a hurry to get rid of the squirrels, then I wish that, er, uh...
Anyway, have loads of fun and be safe, and please do let us know how it goes.
So far.....she and I have each popped a squirrel with airsoft rounds via the wrist rocket. Made ‘em jump like hell and take off like rockets. Hopefully those two won’t be back....I’ll let ya know. :)
(I’ve also quickly learned that that one shot aside....whereupon I nailed said squirrel....I truly have sucky aim with a slingshot....Practice, practice, practice)
Get a large tub or plastic storage bin, fill it with water, and drop the Havahart in...
