This is the best movie depicting patriotism, honor and belief in something greater than yourself. Mrs Miniver was made during WW2 when it was ok to believe in your country and freedom. TCM doesn’t show this often so don’t miss it. Sunday May 13 at 3 pm EST

Before Hollywood turned their attention towards making movies, like “The North Star”, intended to gain sympathy for Stalin and the Bolsheviks.

Thanks you for the heads up. This is a good one and Greer Garson is the best - so elegant and feminine. Loved her with Ronald Coleman in Random Harvest.

Great movie. I worked at a National Park and stayed in Greer Garson’s (and Buddy Fogelson) old ranch house, “Forked Lightning Ranch”. Some very nice mission style furniture in the main house, and early design by “Pueblo Revival Style” architect John Gaw Meem.

Didn’t see the movie, but read the book — Nevil Shute, I believe. Written before the war, but very prophetic (like many of his novels, e.g., No Highway, w Jimmy Stewart)

Correct! “Ordeal” was the book title for the US paperback version.

An important classic, about how quickly normal can be lost.

I’ve seen this movie many times over the years, but find it has even more meaning as I get older. We’ve been so fortunate in North America that very few of us have had to endure the horror of a military attack on home soil. 9-11 was horrific, but imagine if bombs were dropping daily on the major cities of the US and Canada. Sadly, the vigilance which has kept anarchy from our shores is being watered down through the efforts of naive do-gooders and the outright treasonous.

. Mrs Miniver was made during WW2 when it was ok to believe in your country and freedom.

It was propaganda to get Americans behind efforts to support the British in the war. There was still a good deal of bad feeling in those days toward the Brits going back to the Revolution and the War of 1812.

It worked. And it was an excellent movie. One of my favorites from the war period.

“it has even more meaning as I get older”

We find the same with the Civil War.

I saw this maybe 20 or 25 years ago and I remember so many dramatic scenes ... her husband going off to scout the shore in the family boat, the house being bombed while Mrs Miniver wears her Donna Reed dress, the return of the husband and shot up boat ... and all the patriotic scripting anyone could want.

Truly a masterpiece.
