Deer Soars Through Windshield, Rear Window, Critically Injuring Driver

A Lake Butler man was critically injured Friday morning when a car coming from the opposite direction on State Road 121 north of Gainesville hit a deer, sending the animal careening through the man's windshield and out the truck's rear window, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

According to troopers, LaCrosse resident Richard Swygart, 29, was driving a 2010 Chevy Malibu northbound on SR 121 near the intersection with County Road 236, south of Worthington Springs, at around 7:20 a.m. Friday when a deer crossed the road directly in front of Swygart's vehicle.

Troopers said Swygart's Malibu hit the deer, sending it airborne into the southbound lane and into the path of a 1989 Toyota Tacoma pickup being driven by Eric W. Parrish, 29, of Lake Butler.

The deer went through the Tacoma's windshield, striking Parrish and then traveling out the pickup's rear window, troopers said.

Parrish's pickup continued southbound on SR 121, then traveled off the roadway, where it struck a fence and tree before coming to a stop.

Parrish was transported to Shands at the University of Florida in critical condition. Swygart was not injured in the accident. Both drivers were wearing seat belts. No charges were filed, troopers said.

The deer was running without headlights and should be charged!

An insurance appraiser told me if you have a choice take out either the front or back legs. Never straddle the deer as it will roll up the hood and through the windshield.
Things happen fast though and you don’t always have a choice.

Just spent all day Fri and Sat moving my daughter from UF in Gainesville. Her apartment was within sight of Shand’s helipad and it was amazing at the number of Lifeflights landing there. If he was flown in, I definitely heard him land. Great hospital, I pray he makes it.

My son, a long hauler running thru’ Colorado night before last, had an albino elk dash out across the highway directly in front of him. He said He caught movement just before the elk hit the road and slammed his brakes - the animal ran in front of the truck so close he couldn’t see his legs...and said the animal looked straight at him as he ran - he expected a lout thud - but nothing.

He said he must have a least brushed his tail - but no contact - and couldn’t see the elk in his rear view. He marvels at how impossible it seemed that he hadn’t hit it.

WE call these white deer/elk ‘ghost deer/elk.’ Maybe it really was.

(My son does have a ‘buffalo catcher bar’ on the front of his truck that would, hopefully, keep an animal from being thrown up the hood and into the cab. ‘Wish I had one on my car!)

I've always heard, "If one jumps out at you, hit it don't swerve."

There are far heavier things you might hit if your swerve: an oncoming car, a tree, the jagged rocks at the bottom of a ravine.

should have been in a SUV, light cars don’t stand a chance against a deer.

There is a story that somewhere north of Fort Wayne, IN someone hit a deer and it disappeared into this guy’s little car, through the windshield and into the back seat.

Hey, does anyone think that deer whistles work??

The deer is the most deadly animal in America, to humans.

Their Jihad against people in cars, is the stuff of legend.
