Spray and pray doesn’t bother you? NYC isn’t iraq. Any monkey can just spray bullets. I thought cops were supposed to be professionals.

A man who allegedly killed his 13-year-old half-sister survived a fusillade of bullets from New York City police officers early Tuesday, after pointing his pistol at officers.

I note that the man 'allegedly' killed his sister, but he definitely pointed his pistol at the officers.

How much 2-way range time do you have?

I have none, and still am able to recognize a street gunfight isn’t a qualifying session at the range.

A street firefight doesnt equate to a shooting range. The likely hood the perp was 10 feet away is slim.

Try running down the block then shooting at a torso at 40 feet and see what your kill shot ratio is,

then consider the fact the target at the range wasnt shooting back.

Well, it was a bummer for two cops and the perp!

Sprry, but too many cops kill at the drop of a hat. Especially SWAT. The first sign of a threat and they panic. I understand wanting to go home, but I want to go home as well. Cops chose their job, I didn’t choose to be a backstop to random fire.

Check out the cato institute records of swat incidents.
One cope shot a dog. Another, hearing the shot, turned to the wall and sprayed. He killed a teen girl and wounded her mother.
He put his life above the duty to protect the innocent. And he faced no consequences for his actions.
These stories go on and on. Cowardly behavior that doesn’t even get fired as unfit to be a cop. I hope nothing happens to your boys, but their lives are not more valuable than the innocents they encounter. They chose a career that they knew might place them in harms way.

Three 15 round magazines. One in the weapon, two on the belt. That is a fairly standard ammo load out. The problem is the time gap between round 45 and round 46 tends to get a bit long. Largely because it involves a run back to the station.

I suppose you are both right. I thought high capacity magazines were illegal (sarcasm). I keep 4 full clips of .45 for my XD in the house but never travel with anything but the "compact" clip (13 rds).

I'll bet he gets some ribbing from his fellow boys in blue about using all his ammo and having to start throwing rocks at the perp.

The only problem I have with this shoot is that if someone other than the police shot like this they would be in jail for reckless endangerment. Talk about a double standard.

I think it’s pretty damned embarassing for the LEOs and the NYPD....they aren’t packing frangibles to my knowledge...70 rounds of copper and lead flying loose in the neighborhood doesn’t make much progress towards Public Relations in my book. It looks like nothing better than a drive-by using a MAC-10..

Look, I’m as down on cops as anyone here for raids gone bad. I’ve posted the link to the Cato page you reference numerous times.

And this isn’t a “bad shoot” situation at all, if the reporting is half true. You are barking up the wrong tree.

I'll bet he gets some ribbing from his fellow boys in blue about using all his ammo and having to start throwing rocks at the perp.

Or like one of the other posters said he just got out his backup gun.

One thing i didn't see mentioned in the story is cover. If the perp had good cover it could explain the whole story. The cops know help is on the way so all they are worried about is that the guy stays where he is and doesn't get a shot at them. So every time he sticks an arm out they send thee or four rounds his way to dissuade him from coming out any further.

It is pure speculation on my part, but it fits the situation because ...
1) Lots of rounds fired, but most just hit the cover.
2) Those that do hit are hitting in the arm or leg so getting hit 14 times and not going down starts to make sense.
3) Time is on the cop's side. The perp is pinned down and not going anyplace. He will either bleed out or SWAT will finally show up. No reason to risk getting shot by closing in for a better shot.

I’m not calling it’s a bad shoot, or even care how many times they shot him. But I do take issue with the lack of regard for the missed shots. It shows a lack of regard for innocents.

You don’t understand the nature of a shootout. The number of missed shots here is not out of the ordinary.

Yes, true, it was tragic for the two cops and their families.

The perp ... not so much.

If memory serves me (admittedly it might not) an article in the not too distant past said that the national average 'hit rate' for police is 17% and in this instance the rate was almost exactly 17%.

Also another article posted in just the last few days about survivability of gunshot wounds showed a very high rate of gunshot wounds are not lethal. It surprised me just how few gunshot victims die and I think it would surprise most people. Probably mostly due to excellent and readily available trauma care but I don't recall if it addressed that. I sure don't want to find out though.

I’m most shocked to learn that they carry that many rounds! That is a lot of extra weight to be lugging around. How many rounds is standard for a Police Officer to have on hand at any given time?

I will freely admit that I've not been in a situation like this. If this is an average, then so be it, I'm wrong.

But almost 90 rounds expended, with a 70-odd percent miss ratio, strikes me as pretty damn dangerous. All those rounds need to land somewhere.

NYPD uses Glock 17’s now IIRC.

I was under the impression that the NYPD standardized on the Glock 19 because it worked okay for uniformed officers, plainclothes officers, male officers, female officers, transgendered officers, big officers, little officers, officers with all their hair, officers with receding hairlines...
