Okay, I'll admit it. I'm a coffee snob. A French press will make the best coffee and the best coffee is 100% Kona.

Yes, Kona coffee is great.

I do like French press coffee. Modern day drip coffee makers just do not get the water hot enough to extract flavor from the coffee, IMO.

I’ve heard the best method is running steam through the coffee but those coffee makers are very expensive.

Keurig is not so great, but people like the convenience.

My brother lives in the Dominican Republic. He sends me coffee from their mountains. IMO better than Kona.

Ditto on the French Press. One thing I'll say about Kona, is that at least you know that certain minimum standards are met in the harvesting that I wouldn't necessarily expect from Papua New Guinea or Indonesia.

That said, thare is no best coffee, just as there is no best wine. Kona is smooth, but with certain pastries a good Kenyan will best it. (No Obama Kenyan/Hawaiian jokes please) For something with a stronger bite Jamaican Blue or even a good Sumatra might be called for. There's a reason why superior coffee houses carry dozens of different (unflavored) coffees.

I would like to pass a law stating that anyone selling Kona "blend" must make the word "blend" 50% larger than the word Kona, and that the percentage of Kona be listed immediately after in the same same size typeface as the word Kona.

The guy we met at the Mountain Thunder plantation said the same thing about the french press. When I told my mother about the coffee there, she said it must have been a french press.

See my post #40. I like FP, but this new coffee device has it for breakfast. You can get one for around 25.

I remember the first time I had real Kona. We had a french press and and a little burr grinder, filtered water. I had 6 cups of coffee in 90 minutes. Man that was good. Buzzed for the rest of the day too. And the girl was French-Polynesian.

Wow. that's a strong memory. I can still remember the flavor 30 years later. Thanks for the reminder.

Awesome coffee. My personal fav is anything from Ethiopia’s Harrar region, mostly because it combines a great price with a great cup of coffee. I can usually only get it as green coffee that I roast myself (the best way IMO).

Agreed. We got into roasting our own. Learned about the different levels of roast and cracking. Learned about airing the roasted beans. Much of what is served as "connoisseur" coffee is nothing but junk beans roasted past the second crack until they become oily.

We also like Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee, but the beans are pricey. The Hawaii Kona Beans are great and can be ordered online. The raw beans can be canned and stored for a very extended period, unlike pre-roasted ones.
