A modified platform resembling these robots is expected to be used as government-funded equipment (GFE) for performers in Tracks B and C of the DARPA Robotics Challenge (http://www.darpa.mil/NewsEvents/Releases/2012/04/10.aspx). The GFE Platform is expected to have two arms, two legs, a torso and a head, and will be physically capable of performing all of the tasks required for the disaster...

I wonder if they are going to use a lot of this in the development of the exoskeleton they have being working on over the last 10 years. Its more for transportation, put a guy in the suit or the suit/robot itself can so they can carry more equipment.

I think the honda asimo already did this a decade ago...or longer.I think that thing walked statically, like a windup toy. This one appears to be dynamically balanced - real walking. Anyway I'm impressed.

I think you should watch some old videos of the honda robot. It does not appear to be like a windup toy.

Here's a
2011 video of Asimo. It does look pretty good, and moves smoothly, but it has broad feet that serve as platforms. It has a shuffling gate because it slides one foot forward while standing on the other, so to me it never really broke free of the walking toy concept. There are a bunch of 2012 Asimo videos which show off its enhanced ability to maneuver, but I think it still uses the same static principles.
