Woman who tried to mail puppy walks away from any charges

Minneapolis - When Stacey Champion was caught trying to mail a 4 month-old Poodle puppy via USPS priority mail in January 2011, a spark of outrage was ignited.

Thankfully the puppy's presence inside of the sealed box was noticed before he could be shipped to his demise. Had Champion been successful in her attempt, the puppy would have been placed into an unpressurized, un-heated cargo hold where he would have died.

But Champion will not be punished for her thoughtless, cruel actions.

In fact, according to CBS Minnesota, a judge has dismissed all charges against the woman.

Charges were dropped because the 40 yr-old woman has been declared incompetent.

Her "mental deficiency" has entitled her to a free pass from any repercussions for her actions.

If she has an IQ of 75, I’ll give her a pass

Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.

How about they dismiss the charges if she does her country a favor and ships Nancy Pelosi to the moon?

She put bottles of water in the box so the dog wouldn’t get thirsty.

LOL! If she shows she’s competent at this, I’d do more than dismiss the charges... how about a fulltime federal job? “Waste Disposal Czar” maybe?

That wouldn't be fair to Alice Kramden! I vote for Mercury.

She sounds mentally deficient!

I know a mentally deficient man who got tired of picking up his dogs poop and got the bright idea that if the dog didn't eat it wouldn't poop. So he stopped feeding it. Someone with a full deck stepped in and removed the dog from him.

If she’s truly mentally deficient, she needs to be locked up.

Letting her walk to repeat the same crime again? Not justice.

I sent some vinyl LP’s via USPS to my new home. Based on the condition of the box, I’m guessing if this woman had been able to send the puppy via USPS, they’d have killed it.

Even if the box was stamped “fragile” and treated with the utmost of care, the puppy would have died.

Yup. Probably crushed to death. I sent boxes “solid” with vinyl LP’s and a couple of them were just about ready to burst when received. They had lost their “brick” shape. Fortunately, The records inside were fine, but the jackets on the end records were a bit bent in the corners.

Don’t be ridiculous. We don’t ‘lock up’ people because they have low IQ’s.

Yes, we do! There's a holding pen for 538 of them in Washington, DC!

I didn’t say anything about locking up people just because they have low IQs. I’m talking about a woman who engaged in criminal activity.

However, if she truly lacks the judgment to know that she would have killed the puppy by mailing it in a sealed box, she’s sufficiently mentally deficient that her ability to take care of herself is in question.

It has the added bonus of deterring the “mentally deficient” defense from being misused (which I expect it is in this case).

At the very least, a ruling of “mentally deficient” should mean, “First you get whatever treatment a medical professional deems necessary; when that is established, THEN you STILL have to pay whatever fines/serve whatever time you owe. It should NEVER be a “get out of paying a fine/serving time” judgment.

Did she show the dog how to open the bottles of water?

Anyway, this story has potentially useful information.

(1) If reincarnation is real, and
(2) I'm reincarnated as a dog, and
(3) My owner tries to mail me somewhere in a box,

I'll know to bark like crazy at the post office so I won't die in the hold of an airplane.
