As an English major I can tell you the word “grandiose” does have a negative connotation. As in ambitiously reaching in a way not indicated by the circumstances, or acting like it’s a bigger deal than it actually is.

Whether Wallace looked it up, who knows, but Wallace’s statements and premise is silly.

Says a lot about Wallace’s intellectual acumen that he had to look up the word “grandiose.” I don’t think I personally know anyone above the age of five who doesn’t know (or, can’t quickly figure out) the meaning of grandiose.

Lucky for Chris that daddy got him a job.

In a battle of wits with Newt, Chris Wallace is severely undergunned.

Newt can probably recite the dictionary by heart, providing all usages of the words in it.

It's about time the GOP had a really smart guy on its side. He is gonna murder the libs.

Why would you expect Chris Wallace to tell the truth about anything when Republicans/Conservatives are involved? He wants Obama to have a 2nd term.

And this... is news?

FNC overall may be slanted our way... but Chris Wallace isn't--

Actually, we - the people - knew what he meant, without the vocabulary lesson from Chris Wallace.

At this point, those trying to knock out the current GOP frontrunner, or threat to the frontrunner, are trying to kill him with a thousand paper cuts.

Those people who stand and cheer Newt are not worrying about his vocabulary.

The "elequent speaker" we now have in the WH has shown that speaking ability (albeit with teleprompter) doesn't mean that the "president" will do a great joy for the people.

I don't know what they'll climb on next - maybe his neckties or hair color - but it's far beyond apparent that the talking heads - even most on FOX news - are Romneyites, and next to protecting obama at all cost, they will shield for Romney to the end.

I hear repeatedly on the news that "...most people think Romney is the only one who can beat obama.". No...the news media is saying that because they know obama CAN beat Romney.

Like a sales manager I once knew told his team who were laughing at the top salesman's call report due to misspelled and misused words, "We need to stop worrying about spelling, and worry more about SELLING."

When is the last time a Democrat’s word choices have undergone such scrutiny? This is an example of a personal vendetta that Wallace has for Gingrich—trying to hit ‘em while he’s (allegedly) against the ropes.

The fact is that Fox news is attempting to paint Gingrich as a crybaby, crazy, a whiner, someone with road rage, a racist, etc.. Gretchen said this morning that Santorum’s use of that word came close to calling him “crazy.” Then Chris Wallace came on and tried to drive it home. They just talked about an attack ad Romney has out which has his campaign mgr. Talent and a moderate Molinari who talk of Newt being chaotic and erratic and so forth. They say on this ad that Gingrich had to be removed for this. Mark Levin says this is false and those two people were COWARDS BACK THEN AND DID NOT SUPPORT NEWT AGAINST THE DEMOCRATS. I heard Santorum repeat what this Romney ad said last night.

Here's the American Heritage Dictionary definitions.

1. Characterized by greatness of scope or intent; grand: a grandiose plan to develop the city's waterfront.

2. Characterized by excessive self-importance or affected grandeur; pompous: "It's important ... for judges not to be rattled by political attacks into grandiose assertions of judicial supremacy" (Jeffrey Rosen).

I don't know the context of the remark by Gingrich, so I can't choose.

I was annoyed with Wallace this AM when he was on FNF. He indicated that it was appropriate for CNN to ask the question regarding Newt's ex as the first question. IMO there are more important issues like 'How do we react to Iran's aggression in the 'Straits'.

Perhaps Wallace needs to look up the words sarcasm and irony while he's at it.

And, uh, Chris - Newt is still the smartest man in the room - not you, you blathering tool.

Grandiose.....Characterized by feigned or affected grandeur;pompous

I believe I know which definition Senator Santorum was expressing, and I happen to agree.

Chris Wallace is obviously anal retentive. He evinces an abnormal and sick obsession with researching minute details that he can utilize to play "gotcha" with his conservative prey.

I'll just bet he did the same amount of dictionary research on what the meaning of "is" is when it came to Klintoon.

Pompous fits and has less room for misinterpretation, in Gingrich's case.

I thought Newt’s “gradiose” comeback line was brilliant. I don’t think any reasonably intelligent person got confused about what he meant. If Chris Wallace has to make a point of looking up the word to try to explain it away in favor of Santorum, that says all we need to know about Wallace’s motives.
