Weird to see a plane taking off with the pilot pushing forward on the elevator. Is that a no-catapult take-off?

Yes. This is the STOVL version. The conventional carrier based version is the C variant.

Looks like the tail feathers scrape the deck at the 1:12 mark.

Then that explains the forward pressure on the stick. IIRC, the F-35 has two sources of downward thrust, the engine when it is angled downward, and some fan contraption towards the front. Gotta keep those two balanced or you’ll do somersaults and wreck your nice new toy.

Well, the only thing I’ve ever flown was a Cessna 172 a few times. That had two sources of thrust: The propeller when the engine was on, and my legs pulling it out of the hangar when the engine was off. Of course, if you try that second one with an F-35 you’ll throw your back out real good.

The X-47 will probably be making kills and near retirement before the F-35 gets deployed.

Now now, no need to discourage him. Wikipedia says the F-35B variant only costs $150 million.

SONOBUOY PING!

Click on pic for past Navair pings.

Post or FReepmail me if you wish to be enlisted in or discharged from the Navair Pinglist.
The only requirement for inclusion in the Navair Pinglist is an interest in Naval Aviation.
This is a medium to low volume pinglist.

adding STOVL capability brings the Marines’ F-35B’s unit cost to over $270 million.
