Obama cannot run on his record (Obamacare, Frank-Dodd, Porkulus, the bailouts, Obamacare exemptions for some and and some states, but not others, green jobs, etc, ) and doesn't want to run on his record. He will smear the eventual GOP nominee, and run a negative campaign, and actually let superpacs do it for him.
Same with Romney.
He cannot run on his record as governor, his position on global warming, etc, and so, sit back, say nothing, and allow superpacss to run his GOP opponents (like Gingrich) into the ground through negative campaigning.
I don't care for Newt "Scozzafava" Gingrich, but he does have a point: Romney could tell the pro-Romney superpacs to cool their jets, but will he? If he doesn't, can Romney say that he is running a positive campaign?
Based upon the aforementioned, can some on FOX News channel, Romney, etc, really take Newt to task or challenge Newt on his attacks against Romney with a straight face?
Somehow I don’t see “If you don’t vote for me you’re a racist!” working for Romney.
So Romney must use all of Obama’s reelection tactics to prove your contention that he won’t run on his record as governor, just like Obama won’t run on his record as president?
Answer: no.
The exception that you provided does not undo the fact that neither wants to run on their record.
Romney has been avoding his record at all costs, and focusing attacks on others. Just like Obama.
I never contended that “he wont run on his record as governor, just like Obama wont run on his record as president”, but I think I see how the “negative campaign” thing works.
Negative campaigning is part of the process. Candidates do it because it works. Candidates whining about negative campaigning are mostly just upset that they are unable to counter it.
I agree, Obama has very little positive to actually run on and will run one of the most negative campaigns in history. I also don’t really care. Whoever our nominee is will just have to put on their big boy pants and deal with it.
Every time a candidate whines about negative campaigning (and actually means it), I lose confidence in their ability to win a hard fought election. 2012 is going to be a vicious fight, our team is just going to have to suck it up and be prepared to be as tough (and dirty if necessary) as the leftist enemy.
What you provided in post #4 is the exception to the rule, as Romney won’t play the race card. The exception to the rule isn’t the rule, though. The rule here is that neither Romney nor Obama wants to run on their record.
The other GOP candidates need to show this, and make Romney run on his record, and point it out repeatedly if he doesn’t or refuses to.

All those on Fox or on talk radio, etc, who complain that Obama won’t run on his record, and lambast his coming super-negative reelection campaign (because he won’t run on his record) must say the same about Romney or they are hypocrites and lose all credibility.
It's like a negative campaign.
The 2006 campaign that Dems ran was to run against Bush, not as much for something. Then when they won, they said that win was tantamount to America adopting their agenda, which wasn’t true.
Obama and Romney are both trying something similar: run against your opponents, keep the focus on them, and avoid running for something (or on your record) if at all possible.
Not saying it won’t happen, but Obama doesn’t have an opponent yet. So far everything I’ve seen is just Obama playing the race card by proxy, against any attempt to even find someone to oppose him.
Bingo! Fox News better get their act together or ratings will continue downward.
“Somehow I dont see If you dont vote for me youre a racist! working for Romney.”
Romney supporters use the Mormon card, If you dont vote for me youre a bigot!
I could see them doing that.
