On the 3rd January 1892 JRR Tolkien was born in Bloemfontein, South Africa. To celebrate this event, on this day each year Tolkien fans around the world are invited to raise a glass and toast the birthday of this much loved author.
The toast is "The Professor".
For those unfamiliar with British toast-drinking ceremonies:
To make the Birthday Toast, you stand, raise a glass of your choice of drink (not necessarily alcoholic), and say the words 'The Professor' before taking a sip (or swig, if that's more appropriate for your drink). Sit and enjoy the rest of your drink.
"The Professor!"
Well, my toast was black coffee, only 1030 in the morning here, but was fun. Thanks for the info about British toasting:)
A lord of wisdom throned he sat,
swift in anger, quick to laugh;
an old man in a battered hat
who leaned upon a thorny staff.
—(From Frodo’s reminiscence of Gandalf)
“The Professor”!!!
A home brewed Mead would be perfect for a toast - Miruvor
nice screen name by the way...imagine: meeting “Beowulf” on a Tolkien thread.....
So: who all is looking forward to The Hobbit film?
I would like to also wish my son a happy 6th birthday today...
You’re alright Jr.

Hey ho! To the bottle I go
To heal my heart and drown my woe
Rain may fall and wind may blow
But there still be
Many miles to go
Sweet is the sound of the pouring rain
And the stream that falls
From hill to plain
Better than rain or rippling brook
Is a mug of beer inside this Took
Can’t wait for the Hobbit movie. Meanwhile, since we’ve both been sick and wiped out, we have been having a Lord of the Rings marathon here + chicken soup. Those movies have aged well; they are every bit as well-done as I thought, first time around, and quite moving.
no doubt about it. The LOTR trilogy is a film masterpiece. Yes, it is “different” from the books in some respects (though in most ways, it is like them...).
But they are films...not books.
They are timeless masterpieces. (As are the books...).
The Hobbit is going to be AMAZING!!!
After a break of several years, I’m re-reading LOTR .... this is about the 10th or 12th time for me in 49 years of life.
As far as content, character development, dialogue, physical descriptions of landscapes and situations, portrayals of the richness of Middle Earth ....
... the movies don’t hold a candle to the books.
Lego is finally doing Lord of the Rings sets this year.
The Battle for Helms Deep set looks amazing! (From the one blurry spy image that is available!)

I am SO eagerly awaiting December for the movie.
We’ve got to find a way to speed things up. Maybe we should send them Chuck Norris?
We’ll toast The Professor with our evening meal!!
*raises hand* I am, I am!! Love the trailer; the dwarves singing gives me goosebumps!
A good day to get around to reading “Monsters and Critics”.
The Professor!
The Great Roll of the Shire, aka the "Hobbit Hole Pinglist", has been restored.
Come one, come all.
