Word For The Day, Tuesday, January 3, 2012
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
fusty{FUHS-tee}
-adj
1. Having a stale smell; moldy; musty.
2. Old-fashioned or out-of-date, as architecture, furnishings, or the like.
3. Stubbornly conservative or old-fashioned; fogyish.
[Fusty comes from the Old French word fust, meaning a wine cask. As wine casks are stuffy and smelly, the adjective is a logical association.].
At one time in this country, it was perfectly OK to have your wake at home with the casket in the living room. The grieving family was seated in chairs around the room accepting visitors and condolences.
I recall seeing The Wake in our local theater starring Steve Allen and Jayne Meadows....awesome play. The casket was, of course, in the living room. Very funny play, by the way.
I find the whole breakup with Sean and Allen fascinating. I still want the true story behind it all, not the cleaned up version they served us.
Huh! When Beckel yaps his mouth I tune out and do something else.........I must be pretty good at that. LOL
You know it will fly right over their heads too, right?
The lib radio host Lesley Marshall was on in his stead one day last week and i found her a refreshing change to his crap.
Of course colmes use of the term “play” made it sound creepy - he did that purposely instead of explaining that he didn’t want the baby thrown in the trash like so many liberals would have done.
I’m sure there could be worse people on than beckel, but I can’t name one right now without getting ill thinking about people that annoy me more than him. I missed that show but we dvr them so I’ll see it eventually
I could have fallen out of my chair one day when that Kirsten Powers espoused a conservative viewpoint. Of course, it was only that one time.
I’m sure if things were going better, you wouldn’t have crap like Holmes acting up either.
Everyone’s favorite Hines Ward got his 1000th catch on Sunday, making him the 8th person in NFL history to reach that mark. Probably the first half-Korean to do so.
And I always like a coach who goes for 2 to win a game instead of prolonging it. Even when it was meaningless.
I’m sure that no one at FOX is going to parse my words. The best I can hope for is that some intern reads it, sticks it in a folder marked “Colmes Must Go” and counts up all the entries at the end of the day. If they get tens of thousands of similar emails, it just might have some effect.
I liked the call as well, but when a penalty then put the ball on the 7 yard-line, I thought they might revert back to a kick. The odds of scoring from the seven are significantly worse than the odds of scoring from the two. And, although the outcome was meaningless to Houston, Tennessee and the other Wild Card chasers cared very much.
It cuts down on the chances of a bootleg working, but if you’re going to pass the ball, it may give more space to get a guy open.
Had it counted for the Texans, I’m sure they would have kicked.
No doubt. But, as I said, it did count for the Titans and the others in the Wild Card hunt. At what point does the "integrity of the game" come into play? Suppose that Houston committed a personal foul and the ball was put back to the 22? Do you try a pass which has a very low percentage of success, or a 37 yard PAT which has a very high percentage?
I hate giving the game away too. I realize Houston is on their 47th QB, but still, it has been a dream season for us - we’ve never gotten this far. I can see both sides, but as a fan, we wanted to win. That is why I loved Coach Leach (college) - he looked at each game individually - it didn’t matter if you won last week, this week was all that mattered. The NFL is a business with union employees though - so I guess it runs differently.
A local politician has decided the local police department is fusty. Yep, who need police? It is on the agenda for tonight’s village board meeting. I am going to be there early to get a good seat. Word has been spreading and it should be a good show. With elections in March, I predict this guy gets bounced on his butt into the frigid frozen tundra on election day.
who will crack down on all the meth labs if there are no cops???
Going to OT in a meaningless game and then losing a significant player to injury is a good way to get fired.
In the Texans situation it was important to go for the win, but more important to go for the end.
We have about an inch of snow on the ground, from yesterday. Not even enough to cover the grass completely. It was a spotty lake effect snow, so some areas got a little more. Going to be 13 tonight, then start warming up again.
You would have state police coverage if the town disbanded its force, right?
