A cool little factoid. Yesterday New Horizons set a record for being the closest any man made object has gone to Pluto.

Thanks! Seems like a good topic of its own, for that matter. One of the disks I got out of the public library a week or so ago is the show about Pluto’s planethood, the Tyson one, pretty amusing, the extra footage pissed me off though. :’)

The text says that New Horizons will make its closest approach to Pluto on July 14, 2015, when it will pass less than 8,000 miles away. From that distance it will be able to see objects the size of a football field. Chances are they will be disappointed and will not find any football fields.

Currently the spaceship is still about 10 times as far from Pluto as the earth is from the sun.
