Nationals catcher Wilson Ramos has been kidnapped, the Denver Post's bilingual website, VivaColorado.com, reports, with other media sources corroborating the news.
No other information is available at this time.
Ramos hails from Venezuela, where there is a significant problem with kidnapping. Generally, these crimes are for money and Ramos was a logical target, given that his success in the majors earned him the right to a league-minimum contract, which was $414,500 in 2011. That's a lot of money to most people, especially in Venezuela.
The 24-year-old just completed his rookie season with Washington, hitting .267/.334/.445 in 435 plate appearances, slugging 15 homers. The righty supplanted Ivan Rodriguez as the starting catcher early on and is expected to start at catcher next season.
Back when Urgeth Urbina was playing for the Tigers, he went to Venezuela after him mother was kidnapped there.
As far as I can tell, he’s in prison there now.
maybe not
My brother-in-law is from Honduras and two years ago, the 28 year old son of his niece disappeared along with his two buddies and a Mexican couple who were going to rent a house from the family of the two buddies......
Drugs were ruled out as well as kidnapping since no one received any ransome demands. The only thing left was the possibility that a demand for "protection" was not agreed to by the rich family of the two friends and they all were killed and disposed of.......
Didn't you mean "him went to Venezuela after him mother was kidnapped there."
Ungawa.
I should have used his whole name.
Urgeth Umberto Urbina
With this guy making league minimum he probably didn't have the resources to buy the security that the players have to have because they are such high profile targets.
Wow, that is one heck of a rookie season! Prayers for his safe return.
He is inside for attempted murder.
I believe there was also a machete and assault rifle involved.
Honestly I don’t know what to believe out of Venezuela these days.
I pray for his safe return and the punishment of the kidnappers.
The Nats are one of the few things I like about Washington. Hope Ramos is safe. Same goes for anyone else in that awful position.
I can only assume he was in Venezuela at the time. The story didn’t make that very clear.
ping
He really did look good all year, except for a brief period after his walk off home run, where he started to swing for the fences on every pitch.
The nats got really lucky with him. Hard to get a decent hitting catcher, and he is still so young.
