St. Petersburg, FL - When a large breed dog reaches 12 plus years of age, his guardian begins to think about "the end".
Pangs of concern, sometimes panic, begin to seep into day to day thoughts...
What ailment will steal away your loved one's life? Heart failure, cancer, or some other degenerative disease?
Few, if any, dog owners ever ponder their beloved senior companion being shot dead.
That nightmare was one family's reality back on October 2 when their 12 yr-old Golden Retriever, "Boomer", was shot and killed by a St. Petersburg police officer.
On that fateful night, Boomer has slipped through a defective gate at his own home and wandered a street away.
Police received a non-emergency call about Boomer when he was discovered blocking the entrance to a home a block away.

Not gunshots from a police officer frightened of a senior Golden Retriever.
How anyone in their right mind could actually shoot a Golden Retriever—!? This is inconceivable. What a stupid and wicked thing to do. How foul.
Wicked. Good choice of words. I agree.
Shot by a coward.
What in the hell is going on with the LEO and the rash of dog shooting stories? Are they being ordered to do this now? Is this now procedure?
A couple of months ago a cop got shot for his effort by the dog owner. Can’t remember the details or where but I do remember that.
It’s just evil especially when it’s a non-threatening breed such as a golden. Disgusting.
No wonder I hate the oinkers(cops).
“Police received a non-emergency call about Boomer when he was discovered blocking the entrance to a home a block away.”
And who were the idiot home owners who called the police?!
Any fool could tell that it’s an elderly golden retriever who clearly had an owner, was not a stray. They could have offered some treats to the dog and check to see if he had some ID and owner’s phone number.
That said, the police certainly shouldn’t have shot the dog, since it was no threat. They should have called the animal police at worst, who would have been able to get the dog and take him to a shelter.
Obviously it’s procedure. It wouldn’t happen as often as it does, unless it was part of the unofficial police manual, at least.
In SWAT situations, it’s probably done to eliminate a potential threat and distraction.
In this situation, it’s probably done to try and condition the public into submitting to police demands.
I know I’ve defended the police before but this is indefensible. Not only shoot the dog but let it suffer for 10-15 minutes? WTF? If you’ve shot it at close range and it’s going to be die, at least put the poor animal out of it’s misery immediately.
Well when did the ‘procedure’ become...well procedure? A pet who is no threat being put down is nothing but excessive force and abuse of authority. And you’re right...trying to ‘condition’ may be part of it; sorry...this citizen does not condition...period.

Cops are little more than unionized thugs. If they don’t start out as corrupt bullies, they quickly become them. Those given power are almost always corrupted by it and almost instantaneously. There is ample scientific evidence for this phenomenon, including the Stanford Studies.
Until we return to a system of Sheriffs and their deputies (also imperfect, but vastly better than what we have), there will be no end to the tyrannical police state rule. LEO’s should be subject to firing at the whim of the populace like and other elected official, that is what our system with Sheriffs was all about, voting for a citizen of good standing in the community to be able to help ensure the safety of those who elected (chose) himher. Now, after incorporation, they are, by and large, a bunch of unionized gangsters (In my high school, I had at least 3 friends who joined the police court, and all quit within a year or two, because they could not stand the corruption).
This will not end until people stop trading liberty for a false sense of security. We are merely sheep to be slaughtered now.
From the article:
“Moments later, Officer Misty Swanson claims that while she was attempting to look at Boomer’s ID tags, he showed his teeth, growled and that she felt “threatened”.
Rather than use pepper spray, a catch pole, or even a looped leash - the officer shot Boomer from just a few feet away.
Witnesses report that Boomer did not die quickly - he could be heard screaming in pain...the horrible sound of an animal dying from a mortal wound.”
The article goes on to say, that horrified witnesses described the crying of the dog as going on for ten minutes.
I will break out the “C” word for that despicable piece of filth; frightened of an elderly golden retriever & too cowardly or evil to finish what she started.
I hope they feel powerful now. Whoo - what brave men.
Probably not long after the War on Drugs, I reckon.
When they started using fancy military and not using their Mr Friendly Police man procedures.
You won’t find any disagreement here. Well put JDW
I’ve got a 6 yr old Goldie. He will bark at anyone walking up to the door.
If I open the door to that person, Bailey will welcome him/her with a demand to be aknowledged and petted.
I’ve never know a Goldie who wasn’t an immediate “friend” to any person they came in contact with.
It's like arming a bunch of sixth graders. They don't know what to do with power except show it off and abuse it.
Same with golden labs.
Friendliest dogs on the planet. You can almost assuredly leave them alone with small children.
I’d never do that, but if there was one kind of dog that I could, that’d be it.
I once had a Golden Retriever named Misty. She was courageous and kind -- the precise opposite of the pig Misty Swanson.
