Suspect in Trebek Burglary Could Face Life Sentence
NY Times ^ | August 2, 2011 | DAVE ITZKOFF

The woman who is accused of robbing the hotel room of the “Jeopardy!” host Alex Trebek could face a life sentence under a California law for repeat offenders. Lucinda Moyers, 56, who last week was arrested on charges of felony burglary and receiving stolen property after Mr. Trebek pursued her from his room, has two previous burglary convictions on her record, a district attorney’s spokeswoman told The San Francisco Chronicle.

Ms. Moyers herself told The Chronicle that the two convictions stem from incidents at San Francisco hotels in 1990 and 1991, and that she would now be charged under California’s three-strikes law, under which defendants can be sentenced for 25 years to life for a third felony conviction. Ms. Moyers said she had also served an 8 and 1/2-year sentence for a 1997 burglary conviction, but The Chronicle said this was not listed as a strike in the Trebek case.

Perhaps the three strikes rule should be reserved for dangerous offenders? Murder, rape, armed robbery, assault..etc

Yeah, the burglars should just get away with it. Just like they do now.

How about habitual criminals too? Especially stupid ones.

She was just doing a one-up on Obama’s take from the rich and give to the poor non-taxpayers. She unfortunately just jumped the gun a bit.

What the hell is wrong with a 56 year old woman that would cause her to turn to burglary?

Perhaps the three strikes rule should be reserved for dangerous offenders?

Perhaps maybe the criminal with 2 strikes should think about quitting the crime trade or moving to another more lenient state?

We've had enough of the career criminal class here and the 3 strikes law is an attempt by the voters to do something about the problem of repeat offenders. It's not perfect, but why should the innocent always have to be the victims of the criminal class?

Convicted heroin addict. And probably a '60s-'70s child of welfare...stealing since being able to stand on two feet.

How about not reserving it. By the third time one has pretty much proved that one is either incapable or unwiling to stop treating fellow human beings as prey. This woman is a poster child for 3 strikes.

You know you’re a “fail” at burglary when you’re chased down and almost caught by a 71 year old heart attack survivor.

HMMM, life in prison, wouldn’t that be double jeopardy?

Burglary is a safe crime. She got caught twice?
How many times she got away with it. 100? More likely hundreds.

I found myself sitting in jail for drunk driving at 35 years old and decided I was too old for that crap and quit drinking.

Looks like she may be a loser in the Final Jeopardy round.
