A Fullerton police officer has been put on paid administrative leave after she was arrested on suspicion of stealing an iPad from a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoint in an airport

Kelly Janeth Mejia, 25, was arrested last month at Miami International Airport on suspicion of stealing an iPad that belonged to another traveler. She has been with the Fullerton Police Department for about six years, four of them as a sworn officer.

Mejia was spotted on surveillance video placing the iPad in her carry-on bag after taking it from a bin adjacent to a metal detector, according to the arrest report filed by Miami-Dade Police.

Mejia was arrested on May 2 and has pleaded not guilty to third-degree grand theft. She is due back in court Aug. 29, court records show.

Her attorney did not return a phone call seeking comment.

According to the arrest report, a traveler told police she placed the iPad in a bin which was then sent through the TSA X-ray machine. When she went to retrieve the iPad, it was gone.

After viewing surveillance video of the incident, officers located Mejia and saw the iPad in "plain view in her purse," according to the arrest report.

Mejia told police she found the iPad, according to the arrest report. When she was asked what she planned to do with it, the report quotes Mejia as saying, "Keep it."

"She had seen the iPad in the bin and placed her bag of check in over it and walked away with it," the report stated.

Court documents put the iPad's value at $800.

In a written statement to police, Mejia said she didn't see who placed the iPad in the bin and picked it up as "found property."

Not to worry, the union will get her off on a technicality and then she will sue Fullerton, the TSA, and the person who carelessly who lost the item. She will then retire with a full pension and her lawsuit awards

Stupid, threw her career away over an iPad. She won’t do any jail time but she won’t be in the profession anymore.

I wonder what her background checks revealed about her or was she a “political hire”....

Only TSA agents are allowed to steal electronics, jewelry and other valuables at airport grope and zap stations. They have a monopoly on theft there just as the longshoremen have a monopoly on theft on the docks.

Fullerton has a systemic problem.

Another officer Tood Majors was just convicted of stealing Oxycodin and stealing from High School Administrators and even Explorers!

"The state Attorney General charged Major in March with 14 felonies and three misdemeanors, accusing the six-year veteran of misusing a city credit card repeatedly last summer; forging a city check; and stealing from two Troy High School administrators, 11 of his Fullerton police explorers, and the Fullerton Car Show."

He was hired despite a DUI arrest.

Fullerton is a nice place. It is has a republican majority.
The state college skews the statistics somewhat on age.

Republican 28,771
Independent 1,472
Green 380
Libertarian 510
Peace & Freedom 227
Misc. 323
Decline To State 14,017

Which ideally should have never happened but this is just indicative of a problem this nation has.

We have been sold a bill of goods that more police are needed to solve all of societies problems. So in order to fill those billets, the community often has to settle for those unsuited for police work, to include those whose past criminal activity should normally disqualify them.

We haven’t seen the video so we don’t know what really happened. The ipad might have jumped in her purse. The other passenger might have had a bad attitude and deserved to be robbed. We just don’t know.

(Thought I’d get that in before the “cops are always right” group jumps in.)

At least it seems the dogs are somewhat safe in Fullerton. The cops appear far too busy victimizing their fellow human beings to have enough time left over to kill the pets.

If Cops were always right then their Unions would be willing take liability for their members actions.

LEOs are often the single biggest money drain on Cites.

The multi million dollar awards incurred by LEOs is a huge strain on tax payers.

I know it used to be a nice place.

The Republican voters there are letting the police get away with theft, drug addiction and murder. It is super serous when a police department is corrupt. No one is safe. Ask Mexicans about that.

It is a conservative’s natural state to respect the rule of law (although they are not perfect) and to trust and appreciate American law enforcement and that is a good thing as long as the law enforcement is acting American and not Iranian. The good Republicans of Fullerton had best wake up to what is going on there in law enforcement and clean up the joint before their family members end up being imprisoned unjustly and murdered.

I expect Fullerton will find that to be true in the not too distant future.
