I lurve some sea turtles, been down to Padre for releases, seen several nests, but still waiting to find a Ridley of my own.
I'm taking a lunch, the theater is wayyyy up in Plano. Steak in a can, I need my protein.

I used to think turtles were neat until I had two move into and denude my koi pond of every living plant and many of the small goldfish.

I have a can of Turtle Wax in the garage, also a bunch of turtle shell colored guitar picks in, well, my guitar case :)
Does this count? /grin

1 Red Eared Slider
1 Western Box
1 Eastern Box
1 Leopard Tortoise.
I >heart< turtles.
I’ll replace my deceased Red Eared Slider (used to have two, one died of old age) when the time is right. I have my name out there as willing to adopt, which is better, IMO, than getting a “new” one.
Dream Turtle: a Side-Neck turtle.

Turtles carry salmonella. Not a good pet for kids. When I was a kid, I got one at the county fair. They painted its shell. Had a little plastic terrarium. My mom flushed mine down the toilet when she was informed of infection potential. I miss that little guy.

I find turtles a bit crunchy.

The little green ones are good with some oil and garlic. Fry them up and the shells get nice and soft. With a little pasta and some nice Riesling.....
Just kidding. I hate turtles.

I once watched a guy feeding some baby Diamondback Terrapins he was raising in an aquarium. I've never seen reptiles which acted so alert, lively, and apparently intelligent.
As for Salmonella, all birds carry it. There are no sterile, germ-free animals. You don't even want to think about all the potentially pathogenic bacteria which live in and on human beings. Soap is your friend.

Two of my favorite 'lil Texas critters; the box turtle and the horned lizard
My mother said these two little creatures were everywhere when she was a girl, but now they are both on the endangered list. (DDT and distruction of habitat I guess)
Wish I had one of each, but it's prohibited to keep them as pets since they're endangered.
Amazing fact about the horned lizard, it can shoot blood from its eyes as a scare tactic against its enemies. Little thing is actually harmeless.

Come to think of it, I haven’t seen my yard turtles in a while. Been dry for months, so they probably went further into the swamp.

This is the time of year when box turtles and snapping turtles cross the road in my neck of the woods. Whenever I can do it without risking my life I stop and move them to the side they were headed. I don’t understand why people run over turtles. They aren’t that hard to avoid.

Chuck, how are the box turtles and horned lizards doing out your way?
Anybody else in Texas have a report?
I’d sure hate to see these little creatures go extinct.
Thanks.
