Australian researchers have tested a new generation of asthma medication on a small sample of men, the effects show a high potential for improving fat and protein metabolism. The study involved seeing how various hormones affect the metabolism, specifically a class of hormones called catecholamines, which regulate heart rate, metabolism and breathing.

The new generation asthma drug used called Formoterol, is a synthetic catecholamine. Although, the metabolic effects haven’t previously been studied, therapy doses given to animals have shown it stimulates the metabolism without affecting the heart.

We've been down this road many times. I hope this time the therapy lives up to its promise.

Don’t know about the weight loss deal, but I used to use all kinds of medications for asthma during my life.
A Doctor friend gave me a sample of something called ADVAIR and it’s like I never had asthma.
On top of that, eventually instead of using it twice a day, I now only use it once in two or three weeks.

So for me, that was a miracle. :-)

I’m very happy for you! I have asthma, too, but it is relatively mild. I have never used Advair. I tried that newer drug (I cannot for the life of me think of the name right now) that works differently from other asthma drugs, but I had to stop due to side effects.

I hope my asthma stays mild, becuase the new albuterol inhalers do not work, thanks to the green nazis.

You can still find CFC inhalers over the internet, but I suppose the risk there is you don’t entirely know what’s in them.

I can’t see how drugs known for speeding up the heart amongst other pulmonary tricks would be seen as an all purpose diet pill. I hear meth can help you lose weight too!

Oh my, looks like I need to develop asthma! My nephew was taking a new medicine which treats a type of diabetes. He lost a copious amount of weight on it and felt like a million bucks with energy to spare. I’ve read that some thyroid medications can alter metabolism, for weigth loss also.

Well, the earlier versions of the drug did speed up the heart, but this one does not.. or so they say. Many new drugs sound great at first, and it can be years later before the side effects appear. I know of a doctor who will not prescribe any drug that has not been on the market for at least 10 years. I think I agree with him.

Some asthmatics swear drinking brewed coffee improves their breathing so much that they can throw away the inhaler.

Why is that? Caffeine is a lung inflater.

A medical doctor says caffeine contains a molecule similar to that in asthma medications.
