Bear removed from Turnpike (New Jersey_

State officials and local fire companies have safely removed a bear from near Exit 8 of the New Jersey Turnpike.

"It looks like it was a nice operation coordinated between the [Division of Fish, Game and Wildlife] folks and the fire departments," said Sgt. Stephen Jones, adding that Cranbury and Hightstown were on the scene.

"It's been tranquilized and removed by the fire departments, brought down in a ladder truck bucket and transported to a cage brought by the Fish and Game folks," he continued. From there, he said, the 250-pound bear will probably be released in a wooded area.

The bear was first spotted near mile marker 67 on the highway around 8 a.m. this morning. The incident held up traffic in both directions on the Turnpike until about 12:30 p.m.

Takes an army of state workers and their equipment to do what one hunter could do for free and feed his family off of for a year.

The bears are smarter than the average taxpayer if this is how government operates.

At least the story had a happy ending. A 250 pound bear could demolish a car and its occupants, not to mention it would not be particularly beneficial to the bear’s physical well being either.

They killed the bear in our area...near Rochester NY. It was in a tree...they shot it with a tranquilizer...It fell into a net...but IIRC, ity broke its’ neck. Idiots....

Even if it was bear hunting season, you can’t legally (or safely) shoot that close to a highway.

Turn dogs onto it and it won't stay near the highway.

Sheesh!(but I suppose it's illegal to use dogs, huh?)

If it's illegal to shoot the bear near the highway, and it's illegal to use dogs to move the bear so you can shoot it, and it's illegal to shoot the bear out of season, I'd say the problems are in the laws and not the bear.

I have a sister in law who left California to attend Bryn Mawr College. That is where she met my wife's brother at a local party. The two talked earth muffins, staging tree-top sit-ins, shaving or not shaving arm pits, chewed on sprouts and granola, and got married. She insisted on them being vegans. She was all militant animal rights crazy and wanted to kill the effin hunters in the state of Pennsylvania. She never did move back to granolaville.

Then a few years later she bought her first new car, a jeep. She hit a deer and totaled it in the first month. She then wanted every frickin deer slaughtered and dispatched because "there's a population problem". I reminded her of her contradictory positions of the past and she had no response other than "it's different now"

Why would you want to kill the bear for getting stuck in the tree?

Hunting is one thing, I hunted most of my life, but killing is a serious matter, you don't kill just because it's convenient.

Putting hounds out that close to a turnpike isn't a good idea either, unless you don't mind watching your hounds get run over.

“Probably be released in a wooded area” - everybody knows that’s where bears go to the bathroom. Stupid bear, up on the road looking for a porta potty. Probably peeking into windows and saw that Charmin commercial with the bears and thought he had to have toilet paper. Madison Avenue...they even screw up bears.

If there are two things New Jersey has enough of, one of them is bears and the other is public workers. Shoot the bears. Starve the public workers.

A good hunter doesn’t need dogs to do his work for him.

There was a bear in a very populated part of Virginia Beach last week, near the tourist area. Apparently it had been there for 3 days without making it self very noticeable. No one is sure how it got there. Members of PETa were there in bear costumes leading the chant: “Save the bear, save the bear!” The bear finally got way up in a tree and was safely tranquilized. The bear was taken away to The Great Dismal Swamp, several miles from where it was found. It made for exciting watching on TV as Break News for a good part of the afternoon into evening.
