Good morning gardeners. I hope things are going well for all the gardeners. My seedling trays are over flowing with growth. I have heirloom tomatoes, Marion and Arkansas Travelers ready for repotting. Paste tomatoes and squash were repotted a few days ago. I Also have a few types of flowers also doing well. I will plant some hot peppers in my garden also. Hot peppers have always done well for me. Sweet Bell peppers I have always had problems growing but will try them once again.
If you are a gardener or you are just starting out and are in need of advice or just encouragement please feel free to join in and enjoy the friendly discussion. Our Freeper community is full of gardeners, each with varying interests and skill levels from Master Gardener to novice.

Damp and chilly here and more rain in the forecast..........AGAIN
Morning. Lots to tend to this week. All of our plants came up and I expect lettuces and radishes for the weekend table. Plant swap tomorrow in the garden with fellow gardeners and time to start buying/starting summer crop. Plans are to set trellises and plants in three weeks.
I have a question for my gardening Freepers... I started tomato seeds in a device that looks like a small, rectangular green house of sorts. The sprouts are probably about an inch and pushing against the top, clear lid. Do I now transplant the seedlings to smaller containers or do I simply remove the lid and allow them to get bigger? Any help is greatly appreciated!
No...
You transplant them to the next logical larger container, and when you do, plant them DEEP. Right up to the first leaves. If you’re using a garden light, drop it down so it is nearly touching the leaves of your transplants; to prevent leggy plants.
Tomatoes will form roots where their stem meets soil. You cannot do this with most plants, but you do it with tomatoes. This builds up your root system, allowing your plant to deal with weather, watering issues, etc much better. You’ll be making a stronger plant.
Do not keep the lid on. Do you have a grow or fluorescent lamp/light that you can put about two inches above the leaves? I would let them get bigger.
I have the snow peas, some radishes, spinach and onions out a week and if it were not for raised beds I would have nothing out. Rain and snow, snow and rain has limited very much planting in the garden. I have however got close to 10 varieties of tomatoes started from seed, some green and red cabbage, broccoli, and several flowers hold up in my little playhouse waiting for warmer temps.
I love geraniums and found a place online where I could order seeds and have around 24 come up and are now working on their fourth leaf. I discovered geraniums are slow to germinate and get up large enough to produce blooms. So we shall see how these turn out.
Today will be left for another dry out time as it rained an inch here in the wee hours of the morning. So any gardening today will be transplanting more tomatoes and anything else up large enough to put into larger pots.
Groundhogs! Luckily my son and son-in-law are bow hunters and bows are perfectly legal in the city limits.
Good morning! I’m having a hard time concentrating on gardens when we had a STUNNING upset late yesterday in Wisconsin’s Supreme Court election. The Board of Canvassers discovered 14,000 votes that had never been reported Tuesday night — the entire city of Brookfield. This puts the sitting (conservative) SC justice ahead by more than 7000 votes and back in for another 10 years. Whoooo-hoooo. Now the unionistas have hired the MN recount lawyer that overturned their election for Al Franken. Hold your hats, folks. It promises to be a bumpy ride.
Oh yes, they are predicting 70-80 degrees for Sunday. If we don’t get thunderstorms with that, maybe I can clean out my gardens.

yes, wonderful news on the election & I have no doubt that the Franken election was a messy illegal sham in the aftermath/recount. What a travesty
Warmer than last week here but heavy rains all today. Maybe some yard clean up tomorrow
Walk in woods with pups revealed the skunk cabbage beginning to push out. Buds on trees. A few wildflowers starting to push out.
This has been a long hard winter here. So anxious to play in the dirt again.

Thanks! I don’t have a grow light but I have them on a table with full Southern exposure. I could use a lamp at night though or rig the top for above the plants.

Thanks....yep, water is a precious commodity so we cant afford any competition with weeds!
I was very proud of myself for getting into the garden early this year. I cleaned everything up and got my early seeds in (peas, spinach, beets and lettuces) and started harvesting asparagus! I had a chard that wintered over just fine, and all my herbs were flowing out of the boxes. A very successful start to the year of gardening!
Then we had storms roll through here Monday! A huge tree near the garden broke off its top (at least 12 inches in diameter) and threw it at the garden! (I know it was intentional!) It smashed the heck out of the electric fence and the trellis where the peas are coming up so nicely, and damaged one of the boxes. It mashed the chard and some of the herbs. In general, the garden is covered in twigs and branches.
Grrr. I will be playing pick up sticks for a while.
I noticed the squash already has squash behind the flowers. The cucumbers and spaghetti squash are growing like crazy. I am letting my cucumbers grow on wire mesh this year. I did that last year, and they did very well.
All my other veggies are doing very well. I have to get the compost piles into the garden and start another batch. I have several bags of lawn clippings that need composting. My wife keeps bitching about the bags just sitting there, but loves the compost for her flowers.
