Philadelphia reminds me of a sales contest decades ago where the first prize was an all-expense paid one-week trip to that city.

The attraction of up to $700 a month in payments, and the near-automatic Medicaid coverage that comes with SSI approval, leads some families to count on a child’s remaining classified as disabled, even as his or her condition may be improving. It also leads many teenage beneficiaries to avoid steps — like taking a job — that might jeopardize the disability check.I've been hearing about this for a while. Inner city types refer to the SSI payments as "crazy checks". It creates an incentive for poor parents to encourage pathological behavior in kids, plus doing badly enough in school to be classified "learning disabled" so that they qualify for the $700/month/kid. Meanwhile, in order to be classified as disabled enough to qualify for SSI, the kid needs to be on psychiatric drugs like Ritalin, Prozac, or whatever.
I thought this was an old story 1-2 years ago and it had died a worthy death.

Amazing, isn't it? That we could have such a culture of dependence that instead of growing up and getting a job we like to do the whole question is whether to pretend to be sick so the government gives us cash.
