The AP reports that 21-year-old Marisol Valles has been fired from her post as police chief of the violent town of Praxedis G. Guerrero when she didn't show up for work this morning. She is reportedly seeking asylum in the United States after receiving death threats from drug cartels. She may have difficulty making an asylum case, though, since U.S. immigration officials typically approve such request on the basis of political threats to an applicant's life or well-being, and Mexican drug violence is obviously not state-sanctioned.
Valles was hailed as the bravest woman in Mexico for agreeing to head up the town's police force when no one else applied for the job in October. Warring local drug gangs had beheaded other city officials--but Valles, a criminology student, said she overcame her fear for the good of her community. Valles said she would focus on administrative tasks and community-building, and would not take on the drug cartels.
Even so, she reportedly became the target of a campaign of intimidation. Mexican papers reported Friday that Valles fled the town and was seeking asylum in the United States after receiving death threats, but city officials released a statement claiming Valles was only traveling across the border for a brief stay to get her young son medical attention. They said she would be back on the job by this morning. When she didn't show up, they fired her.

Better fired than fired upon...
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
Hmm... I’d definitely give her amnesty. ;)
Huh?
The writer offers no evidence to back up this assertion.
Don’t blame her one bit.
She can apply for a temporary visa to work in agriculture. She can renew the temporary visa and keep working here. After a while she can apply for permanent resident alien status. There are ways for Mexicans to come to the USA legally.
So what exactly do you expect a 20 yr old girl to do against the drug cartels?
The Mexican drug cartels tend to give those in authority two choices: Take the briefcase full of money or take the box containing the heads of your children. Often not a difficult choice to make.
I’d actually like to see her get asylum, if this story is true. If she had the guts (albeit possibly misguided) to try and handle security in a border town near Ciudad Juarez, she may well have what it takes to succeed here. And at least she’s going through legal channels instead of sneaking across the border in the dead of night like thousands of her countrymen a week.

Re post 7. I picked that up too. I read articles until I come on a statement that either I know is false or is an opinion. That statement is an opinion, as far as I am concerned. Just give us the news, not opinion tarted up as news.
NOT GUILTY!!
She’s cute, but what the hell ever prompted her to take that job, and what kind of idiots allowed her to take it?
Send Hillary down there to take her place.
She’s supposedly the smartest woman in the world.
There are a lot of cute girls in Mexico who would do almost anything to have an American boyfriend or husband. It is the Mexican men who have screwed up Mexico.
Exactly how could she take on the drug cartels?
She’d likely have disappeared and (very likely) be pimped out like that other female police chief.
If the drug cartels targetted her, she was probably being effective and, therefore, a threat to them.
