I am presenting these numbers to demonstrate how easy it is to raise some of your own food on a standard sized urban lot. Chickens are a lot of fun to raise and they return you kindness with more eggs than you can eat by yourself. I have kept an egg log since the girls started laying last June, and the habit has stuck with me, so I have excellent numbers to go by when it comes to egg production.

Although I am not selling eggs at this point, around here, organic brown eggs are selling for $4.50 a dozen.

Half a dozen nice brown eggs makes a great conversation starter with neighbors you don't know, and if times get tough, fresh henfruit is a great barter item.

Kippis!

After the initial coop construction - how much does it cost to feed, house and maintain (electricity, etc) your flock?

If you broke down the numbers - how much does a dozen eggs cost you?

How many do you have?

A chicken has decided to take up residence in my side yard. She hides under the shed so if she is laying eggs I can’t get to them. There a couple of cats that seem to hanging out with her. I will see them setting with in a few feet of each other when I get home. What problems could I have if any with just leaving her out there. Is common for chickens to hang out with cats?

One more question — I’m sure someone will get around to asking this sooner or later —

What do you do about all of the Obama they produce?

We have not had chickens on our farm for over 60 years, but I plan to have some soon.

At this point I think I will order Barred Rock pullets. My brother has expressed some interest in some chics for meat, are Barred Rocks a good choice for that? Have heard them described as dual purpose birds.

I just made a major addition to our family orchard. 29 new fruit trees, 4 blueberry bushes, strawberries, blackberries and even trying a few PawPaws.

The garden is next, plant to really enlarge that too.

Great addition to a compost pile, very potent fertilizer. The real question is what do we do with Obozo himself.

I had a stray chicken take up residence in my side yard several years ago. They are not allowed in our county but the illegal aliens raise them anyway. I started feeding her and named her Henny. Every night she would jump on the deck then up on the roof and into a tree to roost. She was an Americauna so after a few weeks Henny was laying one green egg per day behind the BBQ grill. She kept that sideyard groomed and bug free. I was trying to find her a home up in the mountains on a farm but I came home one day and she was gone. I think a hawk or owl got her.

We are moving to the mountains soon and I am going to start my own flock of Ameracaunas. But I would say you definitely have to provide them with a safe coop at night and a fenced area if you are not around to keep an eye on them. I would think a cat would try to kill a chicken.

That is amazing. An egg per day would have to take a toll on her body. Just think of all the protein, fats, and nutrients that go into each egg. How do hens keep that up? Do they lay eggs all their lives or only during part of the year?

I don’t know anything about chickens and eggs, are they fertilized? Do you have to keep a Rooster around somewhere, and does he have to ply them with pizza and a beer;)

btw, every try a Peking duck egg? Delicious!

No need for a rooster unless you want chicks. The hens will lay whether the eggs are fertilized or not. That much I know.

I see them when I come home sitting around like this. When I try to get closer they both run under the shed.
