Have you heard how long they take for these layovers? I see where Todd’s average speed is just seconds under Davis’.

Team’s hopes go up in flames
‘BIG BALL OF FIRE’: Gas splatters hot muffler while filling the tank and ignites.
The brutal 2,000-mile Iron Dog snowmobile race where racers annually endure bone-chilling temperatures faced a new peril Sunday afternoon — fire.
A little after 2 p.m., the duo of veteran drivers Tyson Johnson of Eagle River and Tyler Aklestad of Palmer pulled into the Puntilla Lake checkpoint at Rainy Pass, about 130 miles into the race.
The team fueled up from one of the 13 fuel drums lined up at the checkpoint high in the Alaska Range. Aklestad was filling his Ski-Doo and turned to take a drink, handing over duties to a volunteer, when the tank filled and overflowed. Gas spewing out was swiftly ignited by a scorching muffler.

Just from the Facebook page: Team 11 - Palin and Quam are on the run. It's a quick run from Ruby to Galena...will be interesting to see how far they get before Teams #7, #10, #3, #21 and #2 launch out after them! Also very cool to see the guys from Tanana (Team #40) right in there with all those big name teams. Be safe and see you in Nome!

From the
Iron Dog website:
Written by Iron Dog on February 22, 2011 in News
Day two of the 2011 Iron Dog is fast for some, frustrating for others and challenging for all. In just 2 days most of the leading teams stopped in Galena on layover and others were forced to throw in the towel. As is fairly common in the Iron Dog race..the combination of adrenaline, remote checkpoints and competitive racers often leads to an early end for many riders. This year has already seen its share of dramatic stories and tales of tired racers.
Teams #6, #15 and #8 Scratched
It was a rough first night and long day for a few more teams on the second day of the 2011 Iron Dog. Team #8 ran into some seriously bad luck in Puntilla due to an accident at the checkpoint which the racers later realized caused more damage than initially thought. The team took off from the checkpoint thinking they were good to go, however the end result was a damaged oil line which led to the early demise of the engine in Tyler Aklestads machine. A last ditch effort to fly in parts early on Monday was not enough and sadly they decided to scratch. Team #6 and #15 also had their share of hard knocks and dropped out of the race due to mechanical issues (no details yet).
Front of the Pack Charging Ahead
The leaders of the race as of late Monday night are many of the familiar names to Iron Dog fans. Palin, Quam, Davis, Van Meter, McKenna, Dixon, Huntington and many more made big strides throughout the day. Top teams each have their strategies about where to layover and Day 3 will be a very interesting day of teams overtaking each other as they blast out to the coast. Follow the action on the GPS Tracker, Stats Pages and of course with the Facebook fans
I understand the racers may arrive in Nome this evening.

I agree. I enjoy the times when I live in a place where it is summer all year long. But, I do like cheering Todd along.
