Snowed in and bored- lets talk Mosin-Nagants!
Youtube ^

Snowed in three days so far (iced in, actually!)- in West Texas, of all places! I can't go to work, can't even work in my shop! So, I got some video editing software for my iphone, and put together a little vid of my first time shooting my 91-30.

What’s a fair price for an average model, if there is such a thing?

Never saw the attraction of these.

But I’ll admit I’m more of a shotgun snob.

Well, cherish diversity.

I hear the lady’s model is pink for the concealed carry Moisin.

They’re pretty rough. But for the pair and a handful of ammo they only cost me $80 and no paper trail.

They fire. They scare people.

They hurt my shoulder when I shoot them.

any problems with “sticky bolt” syndrome?

Nope! I've been doing my research, did the 20 gauge brush, Hoppe's #9, and drill bit on my chamber before firing. Worked like a charm!

The barrel was seriously nasty, though- took me several tries to get it clean.

Holy cow! Can you imagine the muzzle flash and noise of that thing? It’d be like getting intimate with a grenade!

Bruises are expected, particularly if you pinch a bit of flab (like I did) and are on all sorts of blood thinners (like I am). Still, I love my 91-30 and my SKS also.

They’re good guns for the price.

They seem to average around $100, for the standard model. Big Five sporting goods often puts them on sale, but they seem to have a problem keeping them in stock, around here :)

The sniper model will cost a bunch more, but they are still pretty easy to find.

I've decided to put a scope on mine- There is a pretty standard scope mount available, but it requires modifying the bolt. I've decided to go with this one. It fits into the rear sight mount, and utilizes a long eye relief scope. I've already ordered one.

“several tries to get it clean”

yeah, clean ‘em when warmed up from shooting to get all the gunk out. Some never do clean up bright and shiny, those are usually the ones that have the “been there, done that” look!

Thanks for the lead on the scope mount! I’ve been looking into scoping mine, but have been reluctant to swap out the bolt. This may be the fix. Let me know if you have any luck with it.

Tom
