Deep beneath Vegass glittering lights lies a sinister labyrinth inhabited by poisonous spiders and a man nicknamed The Troll who wields an iron bar.
But astonishingly, the 200 miles of flood tunnels are also home to 1,000 people who eke out a living in the strips dark underbelly.
Some, like Steven and his girlfriend Kathryn, have furnished their home with considerable care - their 400sq ft 'bungalow' boasts a double bed, a wardrobe and even a bookshelf.
They have been there for five years, fashioning a shower out of a water cooler, hanging paintings on the walls and collating a library from abandoned books.
Their possessions, however, are carefully placed in plastic crates to stop them getting soaked by the noxious water pooling on the floor.

And the mostly stupid comments.
Things could become quite problematic during a rain storm. Regardless, the air quality has to be bad, especially if you are far from an air opening.
That is one of the most amazing stories I have ever read. What do they do for electricity. Actually, to be perfectly honest, the way these folks live underground is a lot like the way the majority of people here in Honduras live above ground.
Vegas floods?
Vegas floods?
Thats what i was wondering lol
I think the best bet would be for the city to work off of the idea of underground housing for the homeless, though not as part of flood tunnels. The idea being that in hot, dry deserts, underground living is a lot better than being on the surface most of the year.
The trick would be marginally improving such dwellings so that they can be “unmanaged”, but still have a simple sewer system, and maybe even have potable water available free of charge.
As long as the homeless agree to set up a “co-op”, so groups can live together as tribes, with an understanding that they need to report a few things, like epidemics and fires, they can for the most part be left alone, as long as the nannies can tolerate their being independent.
Vegas is built on a flood plain.
LOL~...Thanks
Oh yeah. When a big thunderstorm hits the Spring Mountains, flash floods can spring up very fast - and the Strip is right at the bottom of the broad Las Vegas valley,
Flash floods in some cases. Storm water management is all about channeling water during rainfall. When you build "impermeable surfaces" like buildings and asphalt, you have less ground to absorb the water. The rain has to run off somewhere. It's prefereable for engineers to channel the rain in a predetermined direction rather than let if run off in all directions and cause flooding. Hence, these tunnels.
So i Guess that sums up house cleaning a couple times a year huh ?
