Good morning gardeners. It is October and here in Central Mississippi the weather has been perfect with cool mornings and moderate afternoons in the mid 80’s perfect weather for working outside. My newest compost pile has received a lot of yard and garden waste over the last few weeks and is cooking away nice and slowly. It will be used on my garden this spring. My mature compost pile will be added to my garden’s soil next week. Compost is excellent for building up and adding nutrients to you garden’s soil.

If you are a gardener or you are just starting out and are in need of advice or just encouragement please feel free to join in and enjoy the friendly discussion. Our Freeper community is full of gardeners, each with varying interests and skill levels from Master Gardener to novice.

Ping to the Weekly Gardening Ping List.

I hope all of you will stop by.

This is typically a low volume ping list. Once a week for the thread and every once in a while for other FR threads posted that might be of interest.

If you would like to be added to or removed from the list please let me know by FreepMail or by posting to me.

Morning.

Our Fall garden is going great with lots of greens to eat. Peppers hanging in there but the cool weather will shut that down and they will probably come out this weekend.

I too am collecting compost ingredients as we are required this winter to interlayer compost under burlap to fight the blight in the soils.

Would anyone like to share their mum strategies with me as in when do you plant them after your done displaying them in pots and when to trim them back in the spring? I buy mums to display each year but often end up losing them before I get them into the ground.

Mt garden is doing great with the cooler weather, but could use a nice shower. I planted cabbage last Monday and it is taking root.

Bell peppers are putting on and there are some as big as a tennis ball. There are a lot of flowers on the pepper plants.

I have yet to find onion slips for my fall garden. Some nurseries say they won’t get any until their spring plants come in.

My broccoli is about 18 inches tall and doing nicely - my cabbage is starting to form heads - onions are doing great - my jalapeno “bush” is so prolific I don’t know what to do with them all.

Question???? I have tomato plants that grew from my summer crop dropped seeds. Some are already flowering (I live in East TN) will the cool nights slow their growth? Should I cover them at night?

Thanks for any imput.

Carrots, collards, mustard greens, radishes, swiss chard, turnips and beets have all sprouted and are looking good so far.
As usual, we could use a nice shower cuz I’m already having to water.

Still searching for garlic to plant.

Still a lot of peppers coming in. Okra and raspberries, too. My late crop of sweet corn was just harvested. YUM! Fall crops in the greenhouse are up. The pantry and freezers are full. It’s been a good year for me.

Yes and yes. My tomatoes have slowed to a crawl since we've gotten a few cool nights. A cold frame or greenhouse would extend your harvest some, but I've not had much luck trying to grow tomatoes in my greenhouse much past the first frost. The days get too short. Carrots, Broccoli, Brussels Sprouts, collards, turnip greens and similar type plants will do well now, though. I have plenty of 'maters on the shelf now, so what we are getting we're eating fresh. My tomatoes are still blooming, but not producing much. I might have enough to do one more round of salsa. My peppers OTOH are still producing like crazy.

Good Morning RD. French string beans planted in September are doing good and volunteer peas from my summer crop are everywhere. The tomato seedlings are going in this weekend along with the collards and bib lettuce. Chili and jalapeno peppers seedlings are going in as well. Coolest morning yet here in Florida, 69 degrees. Hoping onion sets come available at the garden center soon. I am counting on everything maturing before December except the sweet onions. Almanac is projecting another cold winter like last year. Hello La Nina!

Sounds like your compost is doing great. I really need to read up on how to do this.

May I be on your Ping List?

It depends on what type of mums you buy. Much of what is available at garden centers are actually what are termed "florist" mums and will only live through the bloom cycle in which you purchase them. If you can find the "garden" type, you can plant them even while they are in bloom. They just need plenty of water until established and then some mulch for winter protection.

I found this out the hard way:)

Well, growing season is almost over here. We just got dumped on with the remnants of a tropical storm and the weather is supposed to cool.

I haven’t heard of any frost warnings, but the garden is looking pretty old and unkempt right about now.

Good morning, gardeners! We have been battling stink bugs. They are everywhere! From local papers there is info that vegetable gardens and fruit like grapes etc... are being simply ravaged. Gosh I really hate those things.

Good Morning Red. I’m still putting in a few hours a day in the garden but am frustrated at how little I get done without the little woman pushing me. Planted more cover crop yesterday and added more things to the compost pile which finally got up to 150 degrees. We still have flowers blooming and cornstalks to shred with them when they poop out. Weather has been ground fog in the mornings burning off to sunshine in the high sixties by 11 AM. We no longer plant a fall garden due to the proliferation of slugs and snails getting between the leaves of plants. I’ll have some photos to post later on a couple of gadgets I use...
