Some Dieters Are Set Up to Regain Weight

"There's no question that most people who easily gain weight, and/or quickly regain weight after losing it are different from other folks," says Scott Kahan, MD, co-director of the George Washington University Weight Management Program in Washington, D.C., in an email. "The general public tends to think of 'fat' people as lazy and as having no willpower [but] it couldn't be further from the truth."

"Ample evidence, now including this study, suggests that there are physiologic reasons for weight gain, difficulty at losing weight, and rapid weight regain after a diet," he says. "There is no question that certain people are preconditioned to gain weight more easily and more quickly regain weight after dieting, just as some people are predisposed to having their blood pressure spike after eating salt whereas others can eat all the salt they want without having problems with hypertension," Kahan says. "This study is another small step toward ultimately ... [devising] new strategies for weight management and disease prevention that work with our bodies' physiologic makeup, rather than against it."

For the vast majority of human history, death by starvation was of far more pressing concern. So the human body developed all sorts of ways to retain fat, and have difficulty losing it when there was adequate, if not abundant, food.

I’m one of those people that can gain weight pretty fast but I manage to stay fit through sheer vanity.

About 5 years ago I lost 80 lbs. Since then I have gained 10 back. Keeping it off is a living hell. Honestly, if there is food in heaven I am leaving because hell couldn’t be worse.

Hunger is a minute to minute battle. I even dream of food when I am asleep. It stinks.

Oh...And..NO!...I do **NOT** want to know about your magic formula or special combination of magic foods. I’ve tried it and it doesn’t work.

People who are normally slim are not doing anything special with regard to diet or exercise.

By the way, I ski 5 days a week during the winter ( double black diamonds) and in the summer I mountain bike daily as well as going to the gym daily ( and this includes Yoga 3 times a week.)

Hunger is a minute by minute hell on earth.

I just shed 120 lbs and it feels sooooooo good. Only a little more to go. It took me a year. People that have not seen me in a while come up to me and have to ask if it is me. I tell them yes, well some of me anyhow. It has not been hell.
