Carson got to avoid much of the culture war stuff a lefty today has to embrace like homo marriage for example.
He sorta cut across both parties but yes...he was more a Democrat supporter than GOP...no doubt.
And he did fade away...only one interview I think after he quit ...with Bill Zehme....a lefty reporter pal.
All of what you said aside, Johnny Carson was the last truly genuine funny late night talk show host. Not a staged event like Letterman, Leno, and the rest. All of them are pretenders to the throne. Carson was it.
