(Tattoo artists and tattoo lovers are finding creative ways to make their mark on environmental issues.)
Tattoos arent the first things that come to mind when I think of environmental activism, but green-minded tattoo fans from San Francisco to Melbourne are linking the two activities together with creative events.
First, theres TATZOO, an eco-contest that promises free tattoos in exchange for help protecting endangered species! Fifteen finalists were selected on Aug. 5 based on their ideas for raising awareness about the leatherback turtle, California condor, or other endangered species local to the Bay area. Those tattoo-loving finalists now need to engage at least 100 people with their idea for which theyll be rewarded with a free tattoo of their endangered species, inked by locally famous tattoo artists.
And farther away in Melbourne, a three-day tattoo convention called Rites of Passage Festival calls all tattoo-loving environmentalists to enjoy art and music along with environmental education (via The Green Life). According to the website, the festival will showcase eco-friendly tattoo supplies and raise funds for rain forests:
Its our firm belief that its possible to tread lightly without missing out on any of the indulgences weve come to depend on in our lives and its for this reason that 100% of the profits made from the festival will go towards buying agricultural land, which will be replanted with native rain forest.
Sounds like a great green vacation destination (aside from the travel carbon footprint) for tattoo lovers eager to visit Australia; the Rites of Passage Festival happens Jan. 28 30, 2011.
Im not a tattoo fan myself. I have nothing against them, but I dont like needles or pain. What about you? Would you get inked for the environment? Do you already bear the image of your favorite species on your skin?
Some people have such low self esteem and such a poor self image that they go to extreme lengths to attract attention to themselves. Tattoos, piercings, dyed hair, etc. It’s a shame that their perception of their own self-worth is so poor that they will abuse and destroy their bodies just to be noticed. You can certainly include goths, etc in the mix.
I personally wouldn´t want one.
Socially, skin ages and they become ugly. They´re twice as unsightly on women, and will become more so as they age. Then, the Nazis tattooed concentration camp victims. No thanks.
Religiously, it´s un-Biblical
One day I’m going to have a T-shirt made up that says.......”Getting a tatoo does not make a fat chick hot”
Screw the butterflies!
Wolverines are endangered, so being the generous, big-hearted guy that I am, I will make the following offer....
I will pay cash for a wolverine tat by the best artist in the Country, to the first liberal who will go out in the wild naked, and harvest a fresh sperm sample from a live wolverine male so it can be preserved in liquid nitrogen, blah, blah, blah.
I’ll put my money where their big mouths are...
‘Screw the butterflies!’
New tag line, LOL! :)
"What you talkin' 'bout, Willis?"
I have a good friend from Vietnam days whom I hadn´t seen for 40 years, then when I finally did, he was covered similar to that guy. It´s an odd world.
From his left arm, it appears he’s becoming a black man.
Hey baby, wanna see my bonobo?
the haters are out.
