Need help finding RAM memory tester
vanity | 8/7/10 | dangerdoc

I think I have a bad memory module on the laptop. I'm looking for a good program to test the memory modules and hopefully tell me which one I need to replace.

The laptop is running Win 7 64 bit.

Some CMOS's have ram tests built in. Reboot the computer, press whichever button takes you setup before booting, and look for diagnostics.

I used to use a bootable program called Tuff Test Pro. You can still buy it online for around $10 ($28, if you get the loopback test plugs). Great program. Haven't used it for years, but I think I'll buy the CD version of it - I just surfed their web site, and it's up to date insofar as testing the latest processors, RAM, etc.

"But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: for men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away, for his name is Obama."

Also the mfg. of your laptop probably has a free download if a hardware diag is not built into the F10 boot bios.

Vista has a memory test as part of it’s Repair function. I bet it’s there in 7 also.

IDK how a winders user would do it, but every time I install Ubuntu, it also installs an optional ram checker.

Of course, in all the years I have been running Linux, I have never has the patience to actually let an entire memtest run, but still!

Memtesr86 make sure you test it outside of windows because windows reserves memory programs can’t test

The same goes for the one I posted.

You burn a CD and run it from there.

do you have a laptop? when was the last time the system was phyicaly cleaned. Post the system details and if you have not open and cleaned it do so. If you don’t know how post the details. PS vista + has a mem checker on the windows reinstall disk or boot time diagnostics (most are f10 or f12)

I used the win 7 memory tester, it said everything tested OK but it only took about 15 minutes to run, I don’t think it did a very extensive test.

The computer is just randomly stopping, I had something like this happen on a system about 10 years ago, it turned out to be bad ram.

Umm... yeah I have a laptop and it’s cleaned periodically.

And I don’t run Vista.

“PS vista + has a mem checker on the windows reinstall disk or boot time diagnostics (most are f10 or f12)”

What does this have to do with me?

I don’t have a memory problem, so no need to check it.

Did you mean to post that to dangerdoc?

The computer is just randomly stopping,

That makes it a little different. Have you tried reseating the memory?

Also make sure that it's not an overheat problem, especially if you have pets. Pet hair loads up fans and causes an overheat trip with no warning. Make sure fans are not blocked and heatsinks are clean. (some laptops have 2 fans)./johnny

"The computer is just randomly stopping."

Could be your cooling fan. It could be stopped, or just dirty.

Was that computer made between 4 years ago and 1 year ago? Does it have an Nvidia graphics chip in it? If so, that is your likely issue.

It’s moving air and I have a gadget which shows operating temperature is running normally.
