Web attack knows where you live
BBC ^ | 8/3/10

One visit to a booby-trapped website could direct attackers to a person's home, a security expert has shown.

The attack, thought up by hacker Samy Kamkar, exploits shortcomings in many routers to find out a key identification number.

It uses this number and widely available net tools to find out where a router is located.

Demonstrating the attack, Mr Kamkar located one router to within nine metres of its real world position.

“Demonstrating the attack, Mr Kamkar located one router to within nine metres of its real world position.”

Does it tell you how far from the computer the shotgun is?

Well, in my case, it's certainly less than 9 meters...

Not to sound like I’m endorsing this idea, but think about how handy it could be, in the case say of a pervert who has kidnapped a kid, or some whacko putting bomb together in his basement. Just sayin...

The problem would be - who do you trust to maintain such a database even if you wanted to? Certainly not the gummint!

Nobody has shown up yet.
BTW, scumbag hackers, I'm a 2nd Amendment proponent who resides in the great State of Texas so some critical thinking might be necessary before you consider any late night visits 'for kicks'.

Rarely less than two meters for me.

Any "attacker" who can't find me through the phone book is pretty lame. I like router security, but I love Mr. Shotgun.

So many people have a little gadget on their sites that’s supposed to tell you where you are. They never even get my state right, let alone the city I’m near. I’m not worried. I think my ISP routs me through a different city in another state every time I sign on.

So does this defeat the Tor browser plugin?

On most routers you can pick the MAC address. Just changing your MAC address to something different from the address you had when Google invaded your neighborhood defeats this attack. I changed mine twice this week (even though I hadn’t heard of this attack) installing a new router.

This might require registration of the new number with your ISP, but Comcast doesn’t seem to care.

Yep ... knowing where the house is and using that information might be hazardous to the health of strangers ...

He then coupled the ID information, known as a MAC address, with a geo-location feature of the Firefox web browser. This interrogates a Google database created when its cars were carrying out surveys for its Street View service.

So Google collected WiFi information as well as picture and other information for it's "street view" on Google Maps, and now hackers can find anyone who's house has been pictured on Google StreetView by simply querying corresponding address and WiFi information that Google has collected.

F'ing great. And Google was a major contributor to the Obama 2008 campaign. Any wonder what the Obama Administration is going to use this information for as they "shut down the net" now that Obama's authorized to do that?

I can only hope that the Republican Party has a big enough pair of balls to investigate and prosecute Google for this in 2011.

Nah, what was I thinking? Of course they won't.

So does this defeat the Tor browser plugin?

Without all the details of the information that Google's gathered, I'd guess it would since your WiFi information (that is, mac address of your wireless router, if you have one) is paired up with your address/house information in Google's databases. Since any hacker would be using the information Google has compiled on you and not information provided by your browser, seems to me Tor wouldn't do you any good in this specific case. (emphasis added on in this specific case.)

Others may have a different opinion, mine's based on what limited information I could glean from the article.

BTW: I use TOR as well, I don't believe in exposing my personal IP address to any website, FR included.

One of my .45s is much less than a meter from my router. Right now I'm on wireless from another room, but I'm about equidistant from my two .45s. :)

Wouldn’t that still be a good .223? Rounded up...

That one is a bit farther away, and sort of hard to get to in my crippled up state.

But the .30 Carbine is about as close as the bedside .45. And there is a full magazine in it too. When I lived in an apartment which looked out on a major arterial street in San Antonio, the .30 Carbine leaned up against the computer table. The table fit nicely into the bay window. Some gangsta did a drive by on our complex, they might have gotten quite a surprise, since end the .30 carbine is more accurate and a bit longer ranged than the .45 or other handgun. :) They'd at least go away with holes in their pimp-mobile.
