Vanity: How Do You Make FR Posts Fit iPhone Screen?
My need | 06/26/10 | Self

Posted on 06/26/2010 1:08:00 AM PDT by Yaelle

A couple of years ago, one of you gave me the trick to both enlarge the text of FR posts and comments, and keep it within the borders of the iPhone screen for easy FReeping on the go.

I've just bought my new iPhone 4 and I don't remember how to set up this adjustment.

Can someone please remind me of this useful trick? Without it, FR can't easily be read. You have to slide the text back and forth each line. Thanks.

Don’t know about iPhones, but my blackberry has a ‘column view’ tab. Surely iPhone has something similar.

After the FR page loads double tap the screen.

Thanks. There was some trick to do it two years ago - someone should know how to do it here.

Open Freerepublic in Safari. Click the plus at the bottom of the screen and select add to Home Screen

That does nothing. If I pinch the font bigger, double tapping makes it small again. I can’t read the small script and when I pinch it bigger, it can’t be read in column view.

Beyond that It’s expanding and scrolling. Same it was on the 3g

No, there was a trick. I could easily read posts without scrolling from left to right, in a comfortable-sized font. Someone here taught it to me. I had it bookmarked as “larger text” on my old phone. I had to click that bookmark each time I loaded a FR page, but then it worked perfectly.

Open Freerepublic in Safari. Click the plus at the bottom of the screen and select add to Home Screen

That makes a FR post appear as an icon on the phone. That's not what I am talking about.

When I am in a post, reading either the article or the comments, the font is too small to read. So I pinch out to make it larger, but then you have to scroll from left to right to read each line, as they are longer than the screen (even in landscape). That is tedious and unpleasant.

A couple of years ago, when I got my first iPhone, I asked for help here and someone taught me how to make a special bookmark that, when clicked, would make that opened page have larger font AND fit as a complete column within the width of the screen.

Sideways is great but not good enough to avoid scrolling. There WAS a trick. (Stamping my feet.) Whoever knows how is sleeping. Maybe tomorrow s/he will give us the secret. Will ping you.

Some web sites, like Drudge, have a narrow view available for people with iPhones, Blackberries, and such. I don’t think that feature exists on FR yet.

“Column view” is a setting for Pocket Internet Explorer, PIE, It works great on my old Treo 700. I doubt the iphone is going to have Microsoft's browser. I ordered the new EVO from Sprint after checking it out with the Free Republic site. It would format the text so you could read it without sideways scrolling.

The more I read about Iphones, the more I love my 50.00 a month, MetroPCS Caliber.

Handles FR just fine.
