KOKOMO, Ind. -- A 9-year-old girl was critically injured Saturday morning in a pit bull attack in Howard County, police said.
The attack happened in the 4600 block of East County Road 200 South, Howard County Sheriff Marty Talbert said.
The girl, Savannah Gragg, underwent surgery late Saturday at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis.
When Deputy John Michael Cipriano arrived at the home, the child's parents were taking her to the hospital.
"The child was covered in blood, and Cipriano observed a serious wound to her neck," Talbert said. "The child was unconscious and unresponsive."
Police said that Savannah was opening a door at the home to let the dog outside when he jumped on her and knocked her to the floor, biting her on the neck and shaking her violently.

Was it the little girls home? The article isn’t clear, just says “at the home”. Did she live there? Who’s house was it?
This kind of headline is an almost weekly event.
Why does anybody keep this kind of dog? Aren’t they like pet grizzly bears and just a matter of time before they do something normal?
Yes.
I would say something about the dangers of pit bulls but on the last similar thread I got my head bit off...
Shoot it!
The pitbull is just mis-understood!/s
Pit bull owners are criminals.
Fear not, lots of freepers don’t agree with the pit bull lovers......
when one of these dogs, or any dog, attacks and injures someone I never hear if the owners are/were prosecuted. does a persons home owners insurance cover animal attacks? really, I don’t know how that works....or does not work. any stories on what happens down the road after all the pieces are picked up?
It isn’t really fear, just kinda useless banging your head against a brick wall, when you no longer have a head...
Freepmail coming your way.....
The point I was trying to make yesterday was that if (you) have small children then why would (you) want them to be around a dog that may hurt/kill them at any time for no apparent reason. I personally dont care what kind of dog people own. And Im not calling for some kind of genocide. Responsible pet ownership, responsible parenting. The key word being responsible. Something more and more people seem to lack.
I agree, some of these dogs attack family members and others are allowed to get loose and they attack neighbors. They are bad news but I don’t know the answer.
