Well Car manufactures have given us planned obsolescence. :)
But the real reason why Pharma’s won’t do such a thing is viruses mutate. And when they change, nobody knows where they are going. So what might work to kill those buggers in the lab could easily fail in the wild.

Planned obsolescence and designing something to kill/maim your market are two separate actions. The former is smart as long as you don’t annoy your market with too much change. The second is just stupid (market-wise), and criminal.
And, as you said, viruses are biological. They evolve and mutate and are therefore not easy to control.
Perhaps a better analogy would be to compare it to a car manufacturer that employs AI in their computer system, so the system can “evolve” and think for the driver and drive in such a dangerous way that buyers are sure to get all the supplemental airbags and other safety devises.

In my paranoid moments I could see this happening but I think it was a government or governments and it didn’t accomplish what they wanted it to accomplish. I’ve always wondered why they wanted panic and fear because while the media sensationalized it, they were getting their information from government sources.
This is the only reasonable plan of action:
Assemble a 12 man Dynamic Entry team. Equip all team members with:
Two members should be issued H&K G36 MBR rifles. One member should be issued a Benelli M1014 shotgun. One member should be issued a RamCrest Battering Ram. That member, and the rest, should be issued Heckler & Koch MP5's and 10 magazines for same. All members should be issued GAD Flashbang Grenades.
When ready to begin the Dynamic Entry, three members should toss in the GAD Flashbangs. After the explosives detonate, the CQB point man should bring the door down with the ram, and the assault team pours through the breech. It is essential, even if fire is received from inside, that the assault continue to get everyone out of the "fatal funnel" at the doorway, where SWAT team members are often hit.
Once inside the structure, use standard two-person teams to clear each room. Once all the rooms are secured and the relative is apprehended, shoot the dog and burn the house down.
The reason for it is to allow the World Health Organization to develop some sort of defensive plan to thwart the global spread of any potential biological weapon.
It is logically not impossible, but so unlikely as to perish into statistical regions that are not relevant anymore.
Even a pharmaceutical company under severe financial threat wouldn’t dream of enacting such a scenario. Even then, and even if you yourself were of a psychopathical nature, would have to calculate: to make the choice between possible bankruptcy (the ‘honest thing to do’) and risking a life in prison and enduring eternal damnation by the whole population minus one.
So: the fantasy in question is, in an open free market, just that: a fantasy.

Well we know that the hype around H1N1 was engineered even though the actual virus probably wasn’t. If anything it was probably an accidental release.

She may have a point. I’m well aware that the Russians combined the Marburg virus with prions, and that the new, lethal combination escaped the lab and infected people in the Pacific Northwest. Just ask Frank Black; he lost his wife to it.

Draft an email to your sister in which you state things like “She knows too much.” and “We need to implement contingency plan ‘brazen mushroom’.” Send it to your sister and “accidently” include this friend in the .cc list.

And where’s the evidence that the swine flue was accidentally released?
