MARSHALL, Mo.,- A Missouri convenience store cashier is the United States' newest mega-millionaire, claiming a $258.5 million lottery jackpot Thursday.
Christopher Shaw, 29, of Marshall said he rarely buys lottery tickets and wasn't feeling particularly lucky when he plunked down a few bucks after finishing his shift Wednesday night.
"I thought somebody is going to win; there are too many people buying tickets," Shaw said.
It turned out "somebody" was him. His numbers -- 11, 34, 41, 49, 55 and a Powerball of 20 -- made him the winner.
The Powerball jackpot is the biggest in the 24-year history of the Missouri Lottery, officials said.
Shaw says his first course of action will be to "take care of debts," then maybe a trip to Disney World. He wants a new pickup truck and maybe a "hot rod" and something to go fishing in.
"I've never had a new car," he said. "I feel a boat comin' on."
Easy, big fella! Don't go spending all your money in one place now!
Obama is going to take it common folk can’t be in charge of that kinda scratch
He has no idea how much money that is. Its more like 6 cars and a 50’ boat at each home.
and quickly relocates to (insert tax haven location here). (Just thinking what I would do!)
A farmer wins the lottery. He wins $200,000,000.
At the obligatory news conference, all of the stock questions are asked, including....’So, are you going to retire?’
The farmer thought for a moment and then replied........
‘No, I think I’ll just keep farming ‘til all the money’s gone...’
Wait until you read about this guy ten or twenty years from now. He has no clue about what is about to happen to him. He will probably experience serious family issues, friend issues, drug, etc. temptation and a whole host of not so pleasant matters due to sudden, unearned wealth.
Shouldn't he have already talked to a financial planner & some attorneys first. The $258 million is the advertised jackpot over 30 years. If he claims the lump-sum, he's only getting half of that, and that's before taxes.
Hope the one has the same troubles
So, a hundred million's not enough? What do you think the tax rate will be twenty years from now?
258M/2= 129Mx.60=77M And that is just Federal Taxes.
That’s nice.
I’m only aware of one Powerball winner smart enough to wait and make the claim anonomously.
We each have an obligation for the safety and security of our family.
That evaporates when you go public with large winnings.
The world is full of idiots and crooks who think you have the winnings in cash at home.
Then there’s the “Short-story/Sob-story” contestants, who will tell any bleeding heart story to get at your money.
Lucky guy!
I did not realize that one could make the claim anonymously. How is that done? In case I ever have to do it. ;-)
Hire a lawyer to establish a foundation.
The foundation board (You) is not public information.
The lawyer accepts the winnings in the foundation’s name.
Meanwhile the foundation establishes accounts in a number of institutions, so as not to have all eggs in one basket.
One institutions is charged with distributing the funds.
I believe you can set up a blind trust and have a lawyer represent the trust and claim the prize without publicly revealing the principal (you). Of course, the government knows who you are and you’re fully liable for taxes — but your name can be kept out of the papers, so you’ll maintain some public anonymity.
