Willows student airs his story By Lydia M. Harris/Tri-County Newspapers 2010-04-20 17:14:08

A Willows family and local school officials will be featured on the "The Dr. Phil Show" Thursday on CBS Television.

In early March, the Al-Rifai family, Willows High School assistant principal Jerry Smith and Willows Unified School District attorney Matt Juhl Darlington flew to Los Angeles to tape the show.

Muyassar Al-Rifai took her cause to popular psychologist Phil McGraw after her son, Shawki, was expelled from Willows High School for fighting.

His expulsion appeal to the Glenn County Board of Education was denied earlier this month. He had pleaded guilty in Juvenile Court in December and was sentenced to 120 days in juvenile detention.

Muyassar Al-Rifai has said that since Sept. 11, 2001, her six children — all U.S. citizens — have been harassed and discriminated against because of their Muslim faith and Palestinian heritage.

Furthermore, she has said Willows schools officials have known about the bullying and have done nothing.

Though he did not represent Shawki Al-Rifai in the expulsion or criminal case, attorney Larry Baumbach has said he plans to file a discrimination suit on behalf of the Al-Rifai family. He got involved, he said, because he agrees the school district's actions were motivated by racism.

Muyassar Al-Rifai has said she believes Shawki Al-Rifai's civil rights were violated.

A Web site promotion for the show says "Learn what happens when she and her children meet with school officials. Will their conflict be resolved, or will Muyassar have to leave the community?"

Smith said the district did not incur any costs; "The Dr. Phil Show" paid their expenses for the single-day trip.

"It will be interesting to see how the community reacts" after the segment airs, Smith has said.

This is a preview of a horror show. Please DO watch this Dr Phil show and chances are you will be petrified the same as I was. I have never witnessed such blatant bragging on behalf of convicted juvenile delinquent on a network tv.

The family of the perpetrator behaved in a classic gang member fashion. Body languge and brazen lying was painful to watch, because it was condoned by Dr. Phil.

Is there a legal ground to press charges against CBS for libel of Willows Springs school and it's principal? They knowingly ignored the facts, such as the perp admitted his guilt.

IMHO, this is watershed case. If it passes, brace for the open witch hunt on school principals by poor innocent Islamic perps.

Mother -> “Oh woe is me, my six terrorist children have been harassed because the satanic cult they adhere to is training them to be terrorists and kill all you white devils”

Moslems should be deported. citizens or not. they follow a belief system that is totally incompatible with the founding ideals of this country.

The whole thing is that he was not “fighting” as media reports. 17 year old thug assaulted 15 year old kid, knocked him down with multiple punches, broke him 3 teeth and caused heavy body injury. Kid’s medical bills are over $40K up to now.
