A sweet problem: Princeton researchers find...high-fructose corn syrup prompts...more weight gain

A Princeton University research team has demonstrated that all sweeteners are not equal when it comes to weight gain: Rats with access to high-fructose corn syrup gained significantly more weight than those with access to table sugar, even when their overall caloric intake was the same.

In addition to causing significant weight gain in lab animals, long-term consumption of high-fructose corn syrup also led to abnormal increases in body fat, especially in the abdomen, and a rise in circulating blood fats called triglycerides. The researchers say the work sheds light on the factors contributing to obesity trends in the United States.

"Some people have claimed that high-fructose corn syrup is no different than other sweeteners when it comes to weight gain and obesity, but our results make it clear that this just isn't true, at least under the conditions of our tests," said psychology professor Bart Hoebel, who specializes in the neuroscience of appetite, weight and sugar addiction. "When rats are drinking high-fructose corn syrup at levels well below those in soda pop, they're becoming obese -- every single one, across the board. Even when rats are fed a high-fat diet, you don't see this; they don't all gain extra weight."

Wow - like we did not know Princeton. Much of uni research is a HUGE waste of taxpayer money. I know two people who did work for two famous uni’s and it is a joke in most cases.

The government wants to control the food supply.

I'm interested in what you see that I don't.

The other day I went into a Subways shop. I bought a foot long for my two sons.

Next to us was a woman with five daughters. All of them bought a sandwich and sugared drinks. ALL of them were fat. I don't mean chubby - I mean fat.

A friend of hers came in with her three children and the were ALL fat. Eight little pink balloons with faces painted on them. No definition. The mothers were fat.

How do you explain this? There are fat kids ALL over the place. HFC may not be the only cause but it certainly carries its share of the blame along with all the other sugars in food today.

In the 40 years since the introduction of high-fructose corn syrup as a cost-effective sweetener in the American diet, rates of obesity in the U.S. have skyrocketed

It should also be pointed out that a major reason corn syrup is cost effective is that US sugar growers lobbied for protective tariffs on imported sugar, to the extent we pay close to double the world rate for sugar.

This allows the sugar companies to continue destroying the Everglades without having to face foreign competition.

And for more important news... Trajan88 (an American of Italian heritage) loves a big bowl of pasta topped with a nice marinara (made from San Marzano tomatoes stewed with olive oil, a little sea salt [that's not from France], oregano, freshley crushed garlic, Parma cheese [the really good aged stuff], black pepper, and some red pepper flakes)... adding a few beef/veal/pork-based meatballs & hot Italian sausages browned in olive oil ... I cannot figure out why I gain weight if I stop running my 15 mi. per week.

Princeton, do a study to figure out where I'm going wrong :-)

Sugar tariffs and supports are nothing but crony capitalism.

Get rid of it!

You’ve got to read the labels. There are food products that contain HFCS that most people don’t realize is there. I used to eat Vita pickled herring, which you can find at most supermarkets. I recently discovered that HFCS is used as a sweetener and is the 2nd or 3rd listed ingredient.

My parents, neither of whom is obese, but do struggle with their weight; have rolled their eyes at me for years as I have told them how corn syrup is so much worse for you than sugar. My Mom's cardiologist dismisses it as a myth, yet study after study shows that your body processes it differently.

All I know is that I was a skinny kid, yet in high school and college (even while in competitive athletics throughout) I struggled with my weight. To try to lose weight, I ate a strictly low fat diet. Of course, to make up for the bad taste food manufacturers add lots of corn syrup. I worked out like crazy, ate “healthy” foods and kept on gaining weight. When I say worked out like crazy, I mean it-I was on the track team and there were practices in which I saw the track moving up to hit me in the face. Running ‘til you black out is a weird experience!

After college, I decided that if God gave us fat in our milk, then consuming it moderately might be OK. I later cut out artificial fats and all corn syrup...basically anything that comes out of a package. At 36 I am 4 months pregnant with our 5th child and I still weigh 20 pounds less than I did my junior year of college. We use cream on our oatmeal, butter on our homemade bread, and love red meat. For breakfast a few weeks ago I made homemade ice cream: Cream, egg yolks, a little bit of real maple syrup, vanilla and arrowroot powder. The kids loved it and we were on time for church :)!

"Wow - like we did not know Princeton. "

We knew, but with the High Fructose Corn industry constantly bombarding the public with claims that HFC is just like sugar, it helps to have some scientific studies proving that it's not.

The more studies that say this same thing, the more likely we can go back to having real sugar and reducing the obesity epidemic.

Fine with me. Hard on the economy in Lewiston, but it’s been built on an unsustainable basis anyway.

I have been saying recently that the Obesity issue is a perfect storm of several factors, not just one.

Having said that, I gave up regular soda drinking a few years back and dropped 15 pounds.

Almost everything contains HFCS.

The funny thing is that I can remember when they first started using this stuff in quantity and it was promoted as a good thing. “Our products are sweetened with fruit sugar, not that old nasty cane sugar.”

This appears to be a classic example of the Law of Unintended Consequences. Who would have thought that congressmen wanting contributions from FL sugar growers would cause an epidemic of obesity?

It's a Synthetic, you have to manufacture it, duh!

Should be labeled as such.

It's creation and overabundance in our food supply is at taxpayer expense(Corpo-wefare).

It increases the function of the hormone Grelen (think grrrr, I'm hungry) and inhibits Leptin (think , I'm full).

The increase in tubbiness tracks perfectly with it's introduction to our food supply.

It causes diabetes.

Maybe they should study people who “sit around on the couch all day” and collect gubmint checks. I’ll bet they find that that also causes weight gain. Not to mention anger and frustration among those of us who actually WORK for what we have.
