In the 40 years since the introduction of high-fructose corn syrup as a cost-effective sweetener in the American diet, rates of obesity in the U.S. have skyrocketed

It should also be pointed out that a major reason corn syrup is cost effective is that US sugar growers lobbied for protective tariffs on imported sugar, to the extent we pay close to double the world rate for sugar.

This allows the sugar companies to continue destroying the Everglades without having to face foreign competition.

Sugar tariffs and supports are nothing but crony capitalism.

You’ve got to read the labels. There are food products that contain HFCS that most people don’t realize is there. I used to eat Vita pickled herring, which you can find at most supermarkets. I recently discovered that HFCS is used as a sweetener and is the 2nd or 3rd listed ingredient.
