That is an stunning statement, since my grandfather set off to get a job building the Canal when he graduated from engineering/architecture military school. He turned back at New Orleans because he encountered dozens of men dying on the docks from some disease that they had acquired on the job. I believe it was malaria. He stayed state/territory side and built churches across the southwest instead.

In any case, he died in 1938; and I'd hardly call that ancient! But the article is interesting, nonetheless.
