These are the first pictures showing the progress being made on the construction at Ground Zero in New York.

Structural steel for the 1,776ft tower, which will be known as 1 World Trade Centre, has reached 200ft above street level, redevelopment officials said.

Workers are now installing 16 steel nodes on the 20th-floor of the tower which will serve as joints between the steel framing for the building's podium and the steel for the rest of the tower.

Chris Ward, executive director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey - which owns the 16-acre trade centre site, said: 'This progress is one more sign that the site is not a pit any more.

'What people can't see... is over 600,000 square feet of museum space being built below grade.'

I pass this everyday and it has looked the same for months on end. This is what happens when there are too many cooks.

It took 8+ years to get to this:

At that rate, it will be 80 years to get to this:

Why isn’t an American paper reporting on this?

Why isn’t an American paper reporting on this?

Because they might have to use the word "terrorist" and "Islam" in the same sentence.

I hate the design, so I haven't really concerned myself with it.

I liked the architect's original design better. The original was designed to be reminiscent of the Statue of Liberty and complement it. It at least had some message. The revised design appears soulless to me.

yawn. it's like the Big Dig -- the unions and every cockroach in the city (and everywhere else) hopes to milk it for a lifetime.

#7 has been open for what, 3, 4 years now? It's incredible and beautiful (and probably 75% empty, but I think they've had some leases of late). And of course it was built by a private enterprise -- thank you, Mr. Silverstein.

The rest of the design is cheesy and overwrought, but that's just my humble opinion. Others have testified to its gross mismanagement.

The other magnificent building in Manhattan, the Empire State Building, was completed in 13 months.

But why build space nobody needs?

#7,on the right, trapeziodal footprint. The facade actually reflects the sky around it in very beautiful way.

It might take 80 years to lease all the office space in that building.

I hate it. The whole thing is an architectural monstrosity and an insult to the dead. And then they have to go and milk the project. Barf.

That looks pretty cool to me. Does anyone know when it is scheduled to be complete?
