Stakes High for California in Health Care Reform

Among states, California arguably has the most to gain from an overhaul of its health care system: it has the greatest number of uninsured residents in the country and the largest public insurance program for the poor, which struggles to serve 6.5 million people while reimbursing doctors at one of the nation's lowest rates.

Stuck between the increasingly uncertain future of national reform, a looming $20 billion state budget deficit, and a health care system that is limping along and likely to face even greater demand in the coming years, Californians are frustrated. Doctors, patients, politicians and researchers all agree change is desperately needed, even if they disagree passionately on what that change should look like.

If the pediatrician quoted in the article truly has MediCal patient number half of is patient totals(and therefor about 9-13% of his gross revenue), he is an EXTREMELY talented businessman! He would have to be dealing with a payor mix that pays him at about 145-160% of Medicare rates on each and every one of his non-MediCal patients. This guy needs to be elected governor, he runs a very tight ship.

Looking at your thread it amazes my that while other states are trying to keep from getting roped into this California, the brokest state in the union is heading into this headfirst.

Tennessee is working on a similar bill I think. Here is another one that needs reading...several links in it. The Tricare for Life is DOD and doesn't take effect until 2011 the Vets groups raised Cain and could only manage to get it delayed...yet another broken promise to our Veterans.
