NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- A German couple who fled to Tennessee so they could homeschool their children have been granted political asylum by a U.S. immigration judge.
The decision, announced Tuesday in Memphis, clears the way for Uwe Romeike, his wife and five children to stay in Morristown, Tenn., where they have been living since 2008.
German state constitutions require children to attend public or private schools, and parents can face fines or prison time if they don't comply.
Romeike, an evangelical Christian, said he believes German curriculum is "against Christian values."
Attorney Mike Donnelly of the Home School Legal Defense Association advocacy group said he hopes the ruling will influence public opinion in Germany.

I will not be up to comment (gotta go to bed, have an appointment in the morning) but I heard this on the local news and thought you all might want to share it with the many homeschoolers on this site.
It’s good that the US has given them asylum, but it’s sad when people are now having to seek political asylum from Europe.
LOL... this is going to piss off the libs in so many different ways.
Welcome to Uwe Romeike, his wife and five children. You are safe now!
Didn’t we get our inspiration for compulsory government schooling from the Germans?
I think it goes back to Luther himself.
This is good news
Safe?
relatively speaking. heh
German homeschoolers in TN granted political asylum.
Honestly, this is how this country was founded - migration of a few hardy souls due to religious intolerance in Europe. History repeats itself.
We have compulsory schooling, not compulsory “government” schooling.
Good news, thanks for the ping!
“Immigration we can believe in.” In a few decades, when Muslims become dominant in Europe, we may be facing an avalanche of Christian refugees.
Woot, etc.
Praise the Lord!!!
bttt
We’ve been the destination of choice for those seeking asylum from the disfunctions that have periodically swept through Europe, I hope we can remain that way for a long time.
Unexpected happy news.
And don't forget this...
eclecticEel: Weve been the destination of choice for those seeking asylum from the disfunctions that have periodically swept through Europe, I hope we can remain that way for a long time.
You both had similar responses, which were both quite true. And I agree, this nation needs to remain the refuge it has always been. A refuge for people looking to become part of what is here...with the desire to work and make America even better than when they got here. To make their mark and place in America something their children can be proud of.
And note, these people did it the legal way. I'm surprised liberals aren't clamboring to throw them out of the country as they're both legal and Christian.
