BOSTON -- Massachusetts marine biologists said one of the great white sharks tagged with electronic tracking equipment last summer off Cape Cod has traveled as far as north Florida.
The great white was one of five sharks tagged by harpoon in September near Chatham by Division of Marine Fisheries biologists. Officials said it was the first successful tagging of great whites in the Atlantic using electronic satellite technology.
Officials said Wednesday that the tag popped off the shark on Friday and began transmitting data by satellite.
Scientists expect tags on the other sharks to surface and begin sending data later this winter and in the spring.
The tags collect water temperatures and depth and light levels, which help determine where the great white has traveled. The information can help scientists better understand shark's migratory behavior.
I'll bet that those biologist get lost frequently in open water.
I think we're gonna need a bigger boat.
This not a real surprise.
Each winter the democrat predators in the NE migrate to Floriduh for the winter.
I wonder if they’re using a bird that is essentially used for defense?
Tracking sharks? How much does THIS cost?
We’d only need to exterminate four or five species of sharks, and there would never be another attack on a human. There’d still be 295 species of the things left for “scientists” to study.
Intersting. Great Whites are thought to prefer cooler waters [65 or so]. Bad news for the Tiger Sharks.
Why do they need to track the sharks? Can’t we spend the money on important things?
WTF???? In what univers is Florida NORTH of Cape Cod?????
Doh! nevermind, inverted “as” and “north” when I read that... my mistake.
Following the Haitian exodus to Florida’s shores.
Or we could get rid of stupid humans (like my former bandmate) who feel the need to tempt fate with these beautiful creatures.
I’ve seen at least one science program in which they track how far the great whites travel after eating.
The purpose was to show that when a great white eats a swimmer, great whites shouldn’t be shot because the offending shark will have moved far away.
Yes, it was to protect killer sharks from being hunted.
I’m sure this one is related to global warming, as well.
Without looking it up first, I am willing to bet science already knew great whites migrate this far.
Next they will use satellites to figure out where all those birds went for the Winter.
I’ll never go beyond knee deep in the ocean again.
“We were coming back from the isle of Tinian to Leyte. We delivered the bomb...the Hiroshima bomb.”
“Wed only need to exterminate four or five species of sharks, and there would never be another attack on a human”
ROFLMAO,,, just thinking of liberals popping a critical vessel at that suggestion!
It’s the “wow” factor - bragging rights.
